Each municipality receives 15,000 euros of financing, for which a total of 8,000 municipalities have benefited in all batches. In the latter, aid has been granted to 947 municipalities across the EU, which were able to apply for it between June 3 and 4. In this batch, Spain has benefited greatly, since there was no limit to the requests that each country could make, and thanks to this we have taken around a quarter of the aid (224 municipalities). However, all participating countries would receive at least 15 grants.
224 new municipalities in Spain with free WiFi: 1,100 in total
The demand quickly exceeded the offer of aid, with 3,000 applications in the first 5 seconds of the launch of the fourth round, with more than 8,600 in total. Thus, Spain, Italy and Romania have been the most benefited. All municipalities must offer at least a minimum download speed of 30 Mbps, and must guarantee the operation of the service for at least 3 years, offer WiFi 5, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, support minimum 50 users without loss of performance, and have MIMO 2 × 2. The installation process must be completed at least 18 months after receiving the aid.
Therefore, the 224 municipalities chosen are added to the 876 that had already received aid, for a total of 1,100 municipalities in Spain. The installations will be made in places with high influx, such as the central square of a town, a park, a library, etc.
