Lenovo ThinkStation P620, AMD as the nerve center and NVIDIA to graphics
Lenovo’s ThinkStation workstations have opted almost entirely for the latest generation Intel processors, we are not talking about the commercial series, but we think of them for environments where power is essential. What happens is that in the middle of 2020, AMD has shown that its Ryzen far exceed the expectations that had been generated. We have already tested bets for processors of the red giant, although in other manufacturers. But now it’s Lenovo’s turn and it’s through the big door. Inside the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 we will find the new AMD.
We are talking about the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO, this processor has different models in which the clock speed and the number of cores vary. Users who bet on this desktop computer will be able to choose between the different versions of this processor that start from 12 cores, going through 16 and 32 until they reach 64 cores. As for the RAM that will accompany these processors, the top is at 512GB with DDR4 technology and 3200 MHz speed. It is a figure that can scare users unfamiliar with this type of product, but that falls within the normal range of a computer of these characteristics.
Of course, we do not have to opt for the top configuration. On the motherboard there is space for eight RAM memory modules that can be distributed in more conventional ways: 16, 32 and 64GB. The storage for its part has a maximum configuration of 20TB that are shared between SSD and HDD. The SSDs are two M.2 PCIe of 2TB each and the HDDs are four of 4TB each and that have a speed of 7200rpm. Additionally, these storage drives can be configured to RAID 0 and 1 for SSDs, while RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 for HDDs. And, if we were to fall short, on the front there are optional expansion slots that are also easily accessible.
The graphic section is signed by NVIDIA and it is done with professional cards. The NVIDIA QUADRO RTX 8000 are in charge of offering graphics power to this computer. I speak in the plural because the most powerful configuration of this desktop has access to two of these cards. The connection they have with the board is through PCIe Gen 4 and therefore the speed of data transmission and work is one of the fastest at the moment. Both cards have 48GB of GDDR6 memory and the possibility of accessing ray tracing technology thanks to the RT cores that are exclusively dedicated to this task.
Lenovo ThinkStation P620, power for professional environments
After a glance at the specifications of the Lenovo ThinkStation P620, questions may arise about the public for whom this product is intended. The quick answer is at the beginning of these lines, professional work environments. But what kind of environments? Specific It is designed for jobs where the combination of the multiple cores of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro and the graphics power of the NVIDIA QUADRO RTX 8000 are taken advantage of. This type of situation: product development and design (3D simulation, 3D rendering, scale design), financial security (movement monitoring, market analysis, trading), multimedia content editing (series, movie preview, rendering, compilation) video, editing) and development of software and artificial intelligence (programming in different virtual scenarios, program development, machine learning)
In addition, to all these workspaces are added the benefits that come with the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO. The first advantage is security, AMD has created security layers capable of encrypting private files in case of theft, espionage or infection by some type of malware. The second advantage is the manageability when making the change, being a computer compatible with both Windows 10 Pro and Linux, making the change is not difficult. The third and final advantage comes from updates, AMD offers 18 months of planned updates dedicated to improving stability.
Lenovo ThinkStation P620 price and availability
The announcement of this product has been made today, July 14, 2020, it is only necessary to wait for them to comment on its availability. As for the price, we do not have data, what we do know is that, being a product with vertigo specifications and a very clear market niche, it will have a corresponding price and therefore not compatible with many pockets. But we insist, it is a team designed for work centers that really need the technical file with which this desktop arrives. As soon as we know the data about availability and price we will update this article.
