Today’s entry on the Epic Game Store is the latest in the Total War Saga franchise. For the first time in many years, the decision was made not to publish on Steam, but exclusively on the Epic Game Store. This has some advantages and disadvantages. The downsides are that they will fragment the multiplayer community as the version that will be out on Steam in 12 months will be completely separate from the Epic Game Store community. They also had to completely remove any mod support as the Epic Game Store does not have full mod support yet, only a limited beta. The uptrend is pretty big, however, as Epic took all of the V-dollar money and paid the bill. So if you add it to your account within the first 24 hours you can get A Total War Saga: Troy completely free and it’s up to you to keep it.
Removing the option of a Steam version at launch may be a bit of a difficult pill for some, especially since the game has already been announced for Steam, but it’s hard to argue with for free. I would be interested to know how many people are going to grab this giveaway. It will be people who might be trying out a Total War game for the first time, how many are returning to the series after a few previous entries, and how many dedicated fans will buy and play each entry.
Unlike the main Total War games, the Saga games are focused on a specific moment in the story, with a greater emphasis on storytelling and the life of a specific historical character. They ruled in scope and extent, instead focusing on historical details.
A Total War Saga: Troy follows the story of the Trojan War, and I’m quite interested to see how the infamous Trojan Horse is recreated in Total War’s great strategy battlefields.
