The Sunnyvale company has finally presented its AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs for desktop, a generation that, like the portable version, part of the Zen 2 architecture on its CPU side and that maintains the GCN architecture on its GPU side. This means that we have the same processor and graphics core design in the same package, but the architectures of both components are at different levels.
Zen 2 is a new generation architecture that marked an important evolution compared to Zen +, and offers an IPC that is, in general, at the same level as Intel’s Core processors. However, the GCN architecture is an old acquaintance that has been with us since the end of 2011. It is true that AMD has been introducing improvements that have allowed an increase in performance and greater efficiency, but it should have already made the leap to the RDNA architecture , used in the new Radeon RX 5000.
The most important improvement that these new APUs bring is focused, therefore, in performance and efficiency at the CPU level. Not only do they mount processors with higher power compared to the previous generation, but they also have much higher performance per watt consumed. The AMD Ryzen 4000 are well above the 3000 series at the processor level, but not so much at the GPU level.
AMD Ryzen 4000: a look at silicon
In the attached image you can find all the key components of the AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs. a monolithic design with eight cores, which leaves us with a maximum configuration of 8 cores and 16 threads thanks to SMT technology. Each quad core block has 4MB of L3 cache memory, for a total of 8MB.
We can also see that this chip integrates all the classic elements of “northbridge” and “south bridge” (SATA, PCIe root, USB connectors, etc.). In the middle section we have the Infinity Fabric interconnection system, and just below we see a Radeon Vega GPU manufactured in the 7nm process, which has a maximum of 8 CUs (computing units), which leaves us with a total of 512 shaders. On the left we find the memory controllers.
The AMD Ryzen 4000 are manufactured in a 7nm process, both at the CPU and GPU level. I’m sure it will have caught your attention least amount of L3 cache Built-in processor, but I’m sure our more advanced readers will have figured out why: because AMD has used a monolithic core design, reducing the amount of L3 cache required to maintain high IPC, and also latencies.
In terms of performance we find a clear improvement compared to the previous generation. We can also see that the integrated GPUs that mount the AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs are far above the solutions used by Intel on their 9th generation Core processors. They are limited to 8 PCIE Gen3 lines.
The two images that we leave you just below collect all the models that AMD plans to launch in the general consumer market. As we can see there will be two great variants, the AMD Ryzen 4000G, which will have a 65 Watt TDP and will offer higher performance, and the AMD Ryzen 4000 GE, which will have a 35 Watt TDP and they will work at much lower frequencies.
AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs Availability and Pricing
AMD has confirmed that they will start arriving sometime in the third quarter of this year, probably between August and September.
We do not yet have the official prices for Spain of these new APUs, but we can leave you, as a reference, their prices in dollars and an estimate after converting currency and applying taxes.
