has announced a major update for the iMac with a 27-inch display. The all-in-one computer doesn’t just get the latest 6 and 8 core processors from the tenth Core generation, but also new Radeon graphics cards and a revised Retina 5K display. The company is also upgrading the 21.5-inch iMac and iMac Pro.
There are now three basic configurations to choose from. For 2046.60 euros there is the 27-inch iMac with a 3.1 GHz fast Core i5 processor from Intel with six cores, which reaches up to 4.5 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. It is supported by 8 GB of DDR RAM, which can be expanded to up to 128 GB.
In addition to Apple, the iMac 27 inch now only has at least 256 GB SSDs. The new graphics card Radeon Pro 5300 now comes with 4 GB of GDDR6 memory.
For a surcharge, there is either a Core i5 processor with six cores that is up to 4.8 GHz fast (2241 euros) or an eight-core processor of the Core i7 series with up to 5 GHz (2533.45 euros) . Both models are equipped with a 512 GB SSD – the more expensive variant offers more graphics performance thanks to the Radeon Pro 5500 XT graphics card.
Compared to the previous generation, Apple promises up to 40 percent more performance when transcoding 8K videos in Final Cut Pro X. Builds in Xcode are to be accelerated by up to 25 percent. In the graphics update, Apple estimates the increase in performance depending on the workload up to 50 percent.
According to Apple, the SSDs now installed in all iMacs achieve a reading speed when starting applications and opening large files of up to 3.4 Gbit / s. An 8 TB SSD option is now available to users who need a particularly large amount of storage space.
All 27-inch iMacs have a retina display with a resolution of 5120 by 2880 pixels that supports the extended color space P3. True-tone technology also automatically adjusts the color temperature to the ambient lighting. A nanotexture glass, which is available as an option, should also improve the display under different lighting conditions.
Furthermore, Apple is now only offering the iMac 21.5 inch with SSDs. Customers can also configure them with a Fusion Drive. The iMac Pro also gets new Intel Xeon processors with up to 18 cores that support up to 256 GB of quad-channel RAM.
All updated Apple computers can now be ordered via Apple’s website and the Apple Store app. The updates will arrive in the Apple stores and at specialist retailers at the latest in the course of the coming week.
