ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA, review: an off-road value

Last April the Taiwanese company presented the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA, a very interesting ultraportable that stands out for having a very content format, a minimum weight and specifications good enough to guarantee a high level of performance, without compromising, therefore, neither autonomy nor working temperatures.

Thanks to ASUS Spain we have had the opportunity to test the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA During two weeks, and today, finally, we are ready to share with you our experience and to tell you what we found.

Before getting into the matter I want to remind you that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is an ultraportable at its bestIn other words, we are dealing with a team designed to work, surf the Internet and to play our favorite multimedia contents while enjoying high mobility and good autonomy. It is not, therefore, a team to play, nor is it a model that bets on gross power, but rather on a very particular balance which ends up leaning, obviously, in favor of mobility and autonomy.

That said, we have everything we need to approach the analysis with a clear and well defined starting point. Are you ready? Well make yourself comfortable, we start with our review of the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA.

ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA – First Look

As we indicated at the beginning of the analysis, the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is an ultraportable very light and compact, something that is noticeable from the moment we hold the box that contains it, and that is that it weighs practically nothing. The quality of the packaging denotes that we are dealing with a high-end team, and highlights, once again, the pleasure of ASUS to pamper all the details.

In the box we find the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA in star black, an “envelope” style protective case that will allow us to transport it with total comfort, the network adapter and the wiring. As soon as we take it out of the box we find some very good sensations to the touch that denote a more than evident premium character. It is understandable, after all we are dealing with an ultraportable whose chassis is made of a lithium magnesium alloy.

This alloy allows creating very resistant equipment, but also very light, two values that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA perfectly picks up, since it has a weight of less than one kilogram (870 grams in the version with a 33 W battery and 995 grams in the version). with 66 W battery), and it also has a very contained thickness (it barely reaches 1.49 centimeters). Light and thin, but also strong, and its MIL-STD 810G military certification attests to it. This equipment has passed numerous tests for pressure, impacts, falls, cycles of use, vibration, humidity and high temperatures.

To give you a clearer idea of the value that this represents, it is enough to give some more specific information. For example, in its tests ASUS has simulated 50,000 hinge open and close cycles from the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA, 5,000 usage cycles on its connection ports and up to 10 million keystrokes. There is no doubt, ASUS has created a first class ultraportable that is destined to become one of the great standard bearers of the premium sector. The ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA has a build quality and unquestionable strength.

The keyboard that comes with the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is chiclet type, splash resistant, it has a very comfortable layout and it has a backlight system that we can easily adjust. Thanks to the ErgoLift hinge We can adjust the inclination and find the position that is most comfortable for us when writing. This also contributes to improving air flow. At the bottom of the touch pad we have a lighting system dedicated to Alexa, Amazon’s well-known virtual assistant, which is perfectly integrated into the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA.

The touch pad is quite wide, it has a very good touch and we can use it as a numeric keypad. This represents a value that, for some users, can be very important. Its activation and use is very simple, just click on the icon in the upper right corner, and we must do the same to deactivate it. Those who spend part of their workday “doing numbers” will get a lot out of it.

Taking a look at the screen we find a very good image quality, thanks to the IPS panel Matte of 14.1 inches with FullHD resolution that ASUS has mounted, and the format fits perfectly with the overall design of the team, since we have a Nano Edge finish that leaves us a screen-to-body ratio of 94%.

Right at the top of the screen we can see the four built-in omni-directional far-field microphones, which feature intelligent amplification technology and noise cancellation. The speakers are Harman Kardon certified, and the truth is that they offer quite good sound quality.

The front camera it has infrared and has HD resolution, which means that we can use it to make video calls, and also to activate facial recognition in Windows Hello. Are you concerned about privacy? Well, calm, you can physically block it thanks to the physical shutter located on your left.

We return to the keyboard, at the bottom right we have a fingerprint reader, a very useful biometric authentication system that is also integrated seamlessly into Windows Hello, and offers a very good response. On the sides we find all the available connections, and the truth is that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA offers a fairly wide range despite its small size.

After this presentation we are ready to go over your key specs before entering to tell you about our experience of use.

ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA: our experience

Just out of the box the first thing that surprised me was the weight, the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is the laptop lightest in its class I’ve had a chance to test, and this represents an enormous value in terms of mobility, since we can take it with us anywhere and carry it for long periods of time without it bothering us.

Its weight is below the kilogram, which means it weighs half as much as a “standard” laptop (2 kilograms), and twice less than a typical gaming laptop (3 kilograms). I wanted to make this simple comparison so that you are clear about the value that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA offers through its lightness, and the importance that mobility, associated with size and weight, can have in many cases.

The sensations that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA transmits to the touch are excellent. The premium finish shows, and the solidity of the chassis is total. I have moved it a lot during these two weeks, I have taken it with one hand from different positions and grips, and I have not noticed at any time the slightest feeling of fragility. Not a noise, not a simple unwanted movement of the hinge, nothing, and this speaks volumes for the work ASUS has done in building this ultraportable.

The installation and configuration process is very simple, since it is limited to the classic Windows 10 self-guided system. It is no mystery, and once we have finished it, we are ready to start using the equipment. The screen size is set to 150% by default, but I personally think that a value of 125% it is much more balanced in size-to-workspace available, at least with the 14.1-inch format offered by the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA.

My experience with the keyboard has been fantastic, and this is very important when issuing an assessment, since we are talking about a team that is aimed at the professional sector. Since I come from a mechanical keyboard, specifically a Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 with Cherry MX Red switches, every time I analyze a laptop I have to go through a slightly longer adaptation period than normal. The ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA was no exception, but my experience was really good.

The ErgoLift hinge brings significant value in terms of ergonomics as it allows you to slightly lift the keyboard and it facilitates a more natural position for writing. The arrangement of the keys, their mechanism and the good response they offer with every press they make us spend hours writing in front of the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA without the slightest problem. It is very comfortable, and responds perfectly.

In general, the pad is not far behind either. It allows precise pointer control, the clicks work perfectly and the ASUS NumberPad 2.0 LED keypad is very easy to use, although we must bear in mind that it is a solution that requires considerable adaptation time, and that develops its maximum value in the hands of those professionals that much of their work immersed in numbers, rather than letters.

The quality of the screen is, as we can see in the images, very good. Viewing angles are perfect, the color reproduction borders on a great level and we have a high sharpness, thanks to the good balance that it presents between size and screen resolution. Nothing to object to in this regard.

Regarding biometric authentication systems, both the infrared camera and the fingerprint reader offer perfect operation, without fissures. Both are very fast, but I want to make a special mention to the fingerprint reader, since on more than one occasion I put my finger “wrong” on purpose, thereby complicating recognition, and despite everything it worked the first time.

We now turn to performance. The sensations that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA transmits are what you would expect from a computer with this configuration: Windows 10 Pro flies, the startup times of applications, files, data and photos are minimal and we have more than enough power to tackle demanding jobs, as long as we do not embark on tasks that require high graphics power, since as we have said this team comes with a modest Intel UHD GPU. The dissipation system is also very quiet when we work with moderate loads.

The PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD, coupled with the Core i7-10510U and 16GB of dual-channel RAM, make the team respond wonderfully, even when we configure the low power mode to extend the life of the battery. The four cores and eight threads of the processor are a guarantee working in multithreading environments, and the generous amount of RAM that the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA mounts allows us to face any type of multitasking with guarantees.

Autonomy also borders on a high level. ASUS indicates on its official website that we can reach a maximum of 24 hours of use per battery charge with the 66 Wh model. I have had the opportunity to test the 33 Wh model, and in my tests I have recorded average values between 10 and 12 hours. No, it’s not bad, since it positions you on a level more than enough to complete a workday without having to find a plug.

We cannot finish without talking about Link to MyASUS, a very useful tool that we can use with the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA and that allows us to:

ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA

  • Transfer files from our smartphone.
  • Send links from our laptop to our smartphone.
  • Link our smartphone to make calls from the laptop.
  • Remotely access our files from our smartphone.
  • Duplicate the screen on our mobile.
  • Use a smartphone or tablet as an extended screen.

Endnotes: an (almost) perfect ultraportable

ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA

The ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is one of the best ultraportables I’ve had a chance to test. Its design has a minimalist touch and sharp lines that fit perfectly with the sobriety and elegance of the ensemble. Outstanding, without a doubt, and the same applies to its quality of construction. The use of a lithium-magnesium alloy achieves a totally premium finish, giving it a first-rate solidity and resistance and a very good touch, all of this maintaining a weight that, in the model we have analyzed, barely reaches 870 grams.

Let us stop at the weight again. I know that we have already done so at the beginning of the analysis, but we are going to value it once again. The ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA integrates a Core i7-10510U with a Latest generation CPI and four cores and eight threads, 16 GB of RAM and a powerful 1 TB PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD in a design that it is no longer below the kilogram, but falls below 900 grams. Simply impressive, and not only for that excellent performance-weight ratio, but also because the autonomy is very good, and the cooling system is well thought out.

ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA, review: the value of an ultraportable taken to the extreme 87

The experience of using the ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA, both in terms of fluidity and system response, has been fantastic. As I said earlier the system flies, Although we must be aware of the limitations imposed by having an integrated GPU. We are not facing a team capable of moving next-generation games, but this is not a problem, since that is not their goal.

Both the biometric authentication system and the keyboard and touch pad performed wonderfully at all times. Unlocking is instant, and typing is a joy thanks to the spaciousness of the keys and the response they offer with each press. The quality of the speakers, and the microphones, is very good, while the webcam does its job without much fanfare.

It is clear that, for its price, 1,699 euros the model we have analyzedThe ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is a high-end notebook that falls outside the typical budget of the average consumer, but compensates its high price with a very contained weight, a high level of performance, good autonomy and fantastic build quality. It is not perfect, but we can consider it as one of the best in its class.

Final assessment

The ASUS ExpertBook B9450FA is one of the best ultraportables I’ve had a chance to test.
