ASUS PN50, mini-PCs arrive with new AMD APUs

ASUS PN50 is a line of mini-computers for users looking for the most compact desktop computers on the market, capable of delivering good performance for office, consumer computing or HTPC home theater machines.

ASUS has been offering the series with various hardware platforms from Intel and AMD and now we have a great novelty, the premiere of the new APUs «Renoir» that you will know as Ryzen Mobile 4000 and that as desktop CPUs are entering with force in the laptop market. For this type of mini-PC, the company offers versions with the variants of low power “U” series with 15 watt TDP and they can install Ryzen 7 4800U, Ryzen 4700U, Ryzen 5 4500U or Ryzen 5 4300U.

It should be noted that they are the first x86 processors in the industry manufactured in technological processes of 7 nanometers And thanks to this, AMD promises almost twice the performance per watt compared to the previous generation. Doubles CPU core count over previous generation “Picasso” and improves IPC (single-threaded performance) in a double digit percentage.

It combines CPUs with up to 8 cores based on the “Zen 2” microarchitecture with an integrated “Vega” graphics and display and multimedia engines from the company’s next generation of graphics, “Navi”. It supports dual memory channels and supports both conventional DDR4 and LPDDR4X.

The series is delivered in a chassis with reduced size to dimensions of 115 x 115 x 49 mm and in a format barebone for users to incorporate their own DDR4 memory, storage drives, and operating system. All models support up to 64 GB of DDR4-3200 memory in two SO-DIMM slots, while one M.2 2280 slot allows you to equip PCIe solid state drives and a 2.5-inch bay adds hard drives or SSDs with a SATA interface.

It also has advanced connectivity elements such as Wi-Fi 6 (with an Intel AX2000 chip), Bluetooth 5, Gigabit Ethernet, a pair of USB 3.1 Gen 2 type C and USB 3.1 type A ports, HDMI output, SD memory card reader, audio jack, IR sensor and dual microphone. They also have a VESA mounting kit to expand the type of installation, for example behind a monitor.

The versions with Ryzen 5 4300U and Ryzen 5 4500U have a 65W power adapter, while the other two Ryzen 7 4700U and Ryzen 7 4800U will have a 90W one. The first two will be available starting September 7, while the most powerful ones will arrive on September 21, according to some European retailers where they are listed. Its price starts from 404 euros, although we expect them a little cheaper when they end up reaching the market. In fact, in the initial announcement there was talk of a base model for $ 325.

It is certain that other manufacturers will use these processors in their line of mini-computers because we see them as perfect in CPU-GPU performance / consumption. A great alternative to the Intel NUC.
