Bug paralyzes Windows 10 security features

The Windows Sandbox and Windows Defender Application Guard are affected. Under certain circumstances, both applications cannot be opened. Microsoft is working on a patch and, as a workaround, recommends restarting an affected system.

Users of Windows 10 may not be able to use Windows Sandbox or Windows Defender Application Guard at this time. How Microsoft confirmed, both applications may not open on Windows 10. The error messages “ERROR_VSMB_SAVED_STATE_FILE_NOT_FOUND” or “E_PATHNOTFOUND” should occur under Windows 10 version 1903, 1909 and 2004.

Bug discovered (Image: Shutterstock)The Windows Sandbox was only introduced about a year ago and is reserved for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. The app starts a virtual machine with a stripped down version of Windows 10, in which users can run dangerous software without risking unpleasant consequences for their operating system.

Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) is also only available on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. With the security function, lists with trustworthy websites and local resources can be created. If a URL that is not classified as trustworthy is called up, WDAG automatically starts the browser edge in an isolated Hyper-V container. For Chrome and Firefox extensions are now available.

In a support article, Microsoft advises to restart the system after receiving one of the above error messages. Then both safety functions should be available again.

A fix is in the works and will be distributed with an “upcoming release of Windows 10”. However, the company did not provide a schedule for its provision.

The Windows Release Health Dashboard looks in vain for a reference to this bug. Microsoft may classify the error as insignificant due to the uncomplicated workaround.
