The young successful club from Saxony is in the last eight for the first time – and has an unpleasant opponent. Today it will be decided whether the Nagelsmann-Elf can even make it into the semi-finals perfectly.
After the big favorite Paris St. Germain was only able to secure the semi-final ticket yesterday with a late double strike against the underdogs from Bergamo, Italy, it seems clear: The Corona tournament mode, in which the remaining finals are played in pure knockout style, leaves more scope for small sensations.
The fact that RB Leipzig does not necessarily need one was shown by the callous and clear elimination of Jose Mourinho’s weakened Tottenham Hotspurs in the round of 16 – but the opponent in today’s quarter-finals is anything but a lucky draw: Atlético Madrid is under the spirited power coach Diego Simeone by no means known for letting the opponent buy the guts off easily. The fact that the Madrilenians were able to catapult last year’s champion Liverpool FC out of the competition with two wins in the round of 16 is certainly not the only proof: Atlético failed twice in the final of the competition not so long ago, both times at city rivals Real Madrid.
Today RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid meet in the knockout quarter-finals: One game, one winner – and thus another semi-finalist. At 9 p.m. the game will kick off at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon and fans can both with pay TV provider Sky and in the live stream with DAZN see whether the Leipzig quarter-final newbies can wrest the ticket for the semi-finals from the Spaniards favored by the bookmakers.
