Across Germany, according to the Federal Employment Agency, the number of unemployed rose by 25.8 percent in May 2020 compared to the same month in the previous year. So far, however, little attention has been paid to the sharp rise in unemployment for IT professions. Compared to the same month in the previous year, the number of unemployed in the IT sector rose to 32.8 percent in May 2020.
The Federal Employment Agency divides the unemployed into the groups “helper”, “specialist”, “specialist” and “expert”. A look at the detailed statistics shows that unemployment in the IT sector has increased significantly, especially among IT experts. “So that even in the very popular IT job market there are relatively high unemployment figures, gives an idea of how strongly the corona crisis is actually having an impact on the job market,” comments Annina Hering, market researcher at Indeed, about the current development.
Indeed analyzes in the past few weeks have shown that the pandemic COVID-19 affects IT professions to different degrees. Offers for employees from IT support or for IT infrastructure are less declining than, for example, job offers in software development. The job offers in the area of data analytics and information management, however, are declining somewhat more.
The austerity measures presented recruiting with unknown challenges. “For one thing, recruiters had to find their way in the new situation, possibly in their home office,” observes Hering. On the other hand, the new situation of companies required rethinking their entire strategy for personnel development and adapting recruiting accordingly. Among other things, the online job interview has quickly established itself as the new means of choice.
This mixed situation has contributed to the decline in job advertisements in the IT area, “explains the Indeed analyst. In addition, IT specialists work in many industries, some of which were particularly hard hit by the corona crisis. Numerous companies have registered short-time work and had to lay off employees This has a corresponding effect on new job advertisements in the IT area, which will be reduced for the time being or which will be completely dispensed with.
In some IT areas, experts are increasingly looking for new jobs. Searches in the field of data analytics are increasing, including “data scientist”, “data analyst” or “python”. Applicants’ interest in jobs in the e-commerce environment is also growing. Machine learning, meanwhile, aroused somewhat less interest among job seekers compared to the previous year, but the proportion of all search queries rose in the course of the corona crisis. In contrast, the search for jobs in system administration is waning.
The development of search queries in the area of software development looks different. Interest in working as a software developer has not only increased compared to the same period last year, but also since the beginning of the Corona crisis. “IT specialists seem to be increasingly exploring the labor market here,” Hering suspects. As the search for the programming languages C # and Java increases, the search queries for PHP decrease. According to Hering, it remains to be seen whether these are corona effects or a general trend in the popularity of programming languages.
Her outlook is nevertheless optimistic: “Even if some companies are currently more reluctant to hire IT than before the Corona crisis, it is unlikely that IT specialists will be used less frequently after the crisis.” Corona has once again shown how important digitization is and that is why companies need IT experts.
Evaluation information: For this analysis, the job market Indeed examined the search queries from the IT area from June 1 to 19, 2020 and compared them with the search queries prior to the Corona crisis (February 1 to 19, 2020) and the same period before a year (June 1 to 19, 2019).
