After several delays, Google finally presents its new cheap Pixel, with the same Pixel 4 camera and compact format.
As planned despite the delays, the Google Pixel 4a is now official, and it comes to take the witness of the popular Pixel 3a with which Google decided last year, for the first time in the history of this family of phones, to bring the Pixel experience to a wider audience. I / O 2020 may not have been held, but that has not stopped Google from launching the second generation of its affordable Pixel phone series.
The Pixel 4a maintains everything that made the previous model special, and it is accompanied by new features inherited directly from the Google Pixel 4 family. Everything, with the aim of making this new model affordable the reference mid-range smartphone in the market, ready to compete with Apple’s iPhone SE 2020 and with the recent OnePlus Nord within the segment sub 400 euros.

Plastic body and screen hole in the new affordable Pixel
While other firms choose to recycle designs from three years ago, Google has decided build your new affordable cutting terminal based on renewed design lines, which move away from the conservative appearance of the Pixel 3a series to better adapt to the times.
Again, Google maintains the plastic polycarbonate construction for this device, a material that, although it falls outside the set of known as “premium” materials, offers a greater resistance to falls and shocks than glass, in addition to being lighter and cheaper to produce.
Despite this, Google adopts some recent trends such as hole on screen, located in the upper left part of the panel, and in charge of housing the 8-megapixel front camera. Unlike Pixel 4 series models, here there is no trace of the Soli radar nor the infrared-based facial unlocking system. Yes, it remains hollow, however, for the front speaker which, added to the one located in its lower part, forms the stereo audio system of the device.
The device panel makes use of OLED technology, it has a diagonal of 5.81 inches and its resolution is Full HD +. This time, yes, Google forgets about the high refresh rate and maintains a conservative 60 hertz.
The back of the phone houses both the photographic system, with a square shape and formed by a single sensor plus an LED flash; and the capacitive fingerprint reader, located in a position similar to that of last year’s model. And precisely like last year’s model, this terminal maintains 3.5mm headphone port, a detail that his older brothers lack.
In case it is not yet clear enough: yes, the Pixel 4a comes in a single edition, and there will be no larger XL model as it happened in the last generation. The reason? Google claims to have found the perfect balance between screen size and dimensions of the device itself, thanks to the large reduction in margins surrounding the panel compared to last year’s model, and the use of a relatively small screen – at least by standards current–.
Another interesting detail is that the Pixel 4a is the first model since the Pixel 2 in do not incorporate the Active Squeezable Edge system. Instead, Google adopts a method of double tap on the back of the phone to invoke the Google Assistant, but that will not arrive until the terminal updates Android 11.
More power, memory and battery, but without wireless charging
There were those who, last year, criticized Google’s decision to provide Pixel 3a series models with a somewhat underpowered processor. Instead, this year, the firm opts to equip the Pixel 4a with one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700 series engines, which seem to offer such a good result in the most cutting-edge mid-range segment.
Specifically we talk about Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, a chip manufactured in an eight nanometer format, with eight Kryo 470 cores capable of running at a maximum frequency of 2.2 GHz. It is accompanied by an Adreno 618 GPU, and integrates the X15 LTE modem, so that We are not facing a terminal compatible with 5G networks. Although, considering its price, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Google has also wanted to increase the memory and storage capacity of the device, going from 4 to 6 GB of RAM, and offering 128 GB of UFS 2.1 storage –Instead of the “slow” and outdated eMMC that was used last year– in this Pixel 4a. Its battery also grows, although not too much, and we now have 3,140 mAh capacity and 18W fast charging backed by USB Power Delivery technology – so it will be possible to quickly charge the device with any charger compatible with this standard. Unfortunately, for some reason, Google has decided that the Pixel 4a is not worth incorporating wireless charging.
There are not too many news in the field of software: Android 10 It is the version that gives life to the terminal, which has assured updates until, at least, the arrival of Android 13. Among its functions are “Is sounding”, the tool that shows the title and artist of any song that is playing around us; or the new Google Assistant, faster and with exclusive features of the Pixel series, which now finally is available in Spanish, as well as in other languages.
The function of instant captions, that offers real-time text for videos and audios. However, as a novelty the possibility of use instant captions in calls and video calls. At the moment, yes, this function is still available only in English.
A familiar camera system
A section that this Pixel 4a inherits –more or less– from the Pixel 4 series –and which, in turn, was inherited from the Pixel 3 series– is the photographic. Google knows that it has an advantage in the field of image thanks to its advances in computational photography, and that is why it can afford the luxury of not integrate the most cutting-edge hardware in the camera systems of its terminals.
In the Pixel 4a we find the same 12.2 megapixel sensor that Google has been using since the Pixel 3 series, with an opening F/ 1.7, optical and electronic stabilizer, and phase detection auto focus.
Of course, there is no lack of functions like night vision with astrophotography, portrait mode or improved zoom through the RAISR system based on machine learning, which promises magnified captures of quality similar to that of sensors with optical zoom. The dual exposure controls or the “best shot” feature.
As for the front sensor, it remains the same as 8 megapixels, which allows images to be captured with an 84-degree field of view. It also allows you to take pictures with a background blur effect, and use night vision mode.
In the field of video video, Google maintains the possibility of capture clips in 4K resolution at 60 FPS. The option to capture Full HD video at 60 or 120 FPS, and at 720p resolution at 240 FPS is also enabled.
Price and availability of the Google Pixel 4a
He Google Pixel 4a can be purchased at a price of 389 euros in its only version of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, a price that places it below its most direct rival, the iPhone SE 2020. In Spain, it will be available to be booked through the official online store of the company from September 10, and the sale to the public will open on October 1.
As for its colors, this time Google remains sober, offering only a single finish in the already classic color Just black -black-, with an accent in a subtle light blue color for the volume knob.
