But let’s go step by step.
What is MEGA?
In case you still do not know what MEGA is, it is a cloud storage service that you have 50 GB free without any payment plan, just by registering. Or you can pay more for get up to 16TB transfer and storage. MEGA allows us to save our images, programs or files to have a backup in the cloud and free up local space on the disk but it is also useful for remote access to certain documents, from another computer or other device, or even to send them or share them with friends. Be that as it may, you don’t always want everything to be synchronized so we explain everything you need to know about MEGASync, what it is, how it works …
For sync folders with MEGA you need the MEGAsync program, it is a downloadable desktop version software for Windows. What it allows is to automatically transfer the files or documents you have in a PC folder to upload them directly to the online version in the cloud. It is an identical process to what we do with Dropbox and that you have surely used: you save a document in a folder with an exact location and it is automatically synchronized with your account in the cloud or with the application you have on mobile phones, tablets, etc.
All files uploaded to that MEGASync mask will be encrypted and synchronized between the local disk of our computer and the server. In addition, you will usually see an icon in the taskbar that will indicate if they have been synchronized or not, if they are queued, etc.
In any case, the first thing you should do is download MEGASync from the MEGA website; choosing the “desktop version” option. Once the download is complete, the installation begins: accept the various options, follow the installation instructions until it completes like any other program. It will only take a few minutes for it to install correctly.
Once you have the installation done, MEGASync will ask you if you want to create an account or log in. For creating a new account you will receive 50 GB of free space if it is the first time. If it is not, log in with your username and password to start synchronizing folders in MEGA between your computer and the cloud.
When you are logged in with MEGA, you will see that it asks if you want a full sync or selective sync. You will sync the entire account or only the folders that interest you. In this case, tap on “selective sync” to choose only specific locations and not everything.
At this point you will need to select two folders: the local folder and the folder in MEGA. The specific folders in the cloud will be synchronized with the local folder. In the window that appears on the screen you can tap “Change” in each of the two options to choose the route you want in both. When you finish, you will only have to tap on “Next” to complete the process and wait for a few seconds (or minutes) for the folder to synchronize completely.
Add files to MEGASync folder
Once you have followed all the previous steps, you will have a MEGASync folder on your computer, which you will access with an icon in the taskbar or from Windows Explorer searching for it. To save things in the cloud, just drag whatever you want to this folder. You will see that in the icon of the file that you just copied there is a small cross in the corner. In just a few seconds it will be an icon that will indicate that this file is being transferred. And when they are fully transferred, you will see a green tick next to the icon, as you can see in the attached screenshot. This way you will know when it has synchronized with the cloud and when it has not. In case of queuing, it will appear in red.
To check if the documents in the folders have been transferred correctly, just go to the MEGA website, log in and open your MEGASync folder.
Upload files to the cloud
You don’t necessarily have to install the desktop service and follow the above process if you want to store files in the cloud. Another option is to do it directly from the MEGA website where you can create folders, sort them, upload files and anything else you need with your 50 GB of space.
- Go to the MEGA website
- Login with your username and password
- Access the MEGASync folder
- Tap on the “New folder” button
- Put the name you want to the file
- Drag the documents or images from the computer to that folder
- You will see a pop-up window appear with the data
- Selected items
- Confirm destination folder
- Press upload
You can also upload a complete folder with files as long as the space is less than what you have contracted in your service plan. Just go to the MEGA website and your user section and click in “upload folder”. The computer’s file explorer will open and you will be able to find the one you want to upload.
It will automatically be uploaded to your MEGASync folder from the browser. This is especially useful.l if you want to send files to your MEGA account from a computer that is not yours, for example. You will not need to install anything and automatically from the web version you will transfer the documents to synchronize your folder in MEGA. Once you get to your house or your usual computer, just open the corresponding folder stored locally on your computer and will have been synced. A fast and efficient way to transport files without having to send them by email or use a USB.
You will see that MEGA has a transfer manager which can be very useful when you are transferring a large number of files. You will see the remaining downloads, the time remaining to complete, the download speed, the total weight of the files remaining to be passed, and the ones you have already passed.
Synchronize folders from Android
You can too upload or sync MEGA folders from your mobile phone to automatically store the photos you take with the camera, for example. The first thing you will have to do is install the application, log in and grant all the permissions that it asks for: access the gallery, the camera, etc. The advantage of the mobile application is that automatically all the images or videos you take with your mobile camera can be uploaded directly in case you need a backup and you usually forget to do it.
Once you have entered the application you will see the files in your cloud and recent files. To upload a document, simply touch “+” and you will see four options:

- Choose from the file system
- Take photo
- New folder
Choose from the device, search for the image or document you want to upload and after a few seconds the process will be completed. You can also choose “Select all” and hundreds of photos will be uploaded automatically to MEGA. From the computer or you will be able to access all the files uploaded from your phone but keep in mind that they will not be synchronized with your computer if they are not in the MEGAsync folder that you have in the cloud, so you will have to download it manually.
Beyond the folders that you can synchronize in MEGA, another option that the application allows you is to download files locally to which you can access offline. If you have something you want to always have on hand you can mark it Without connection And so you will know that you have access even without WiFi, without coverage or if you have no data. To do this you simply have to go to the file or folder you want of all the ones you have in the application, tap on the three points on the right side and a drop-down menu will open. Press “Save to Offline” and it will take a few seconds (or minutes, depending on the weight) Once completed, go to downloads icon that you will find in the lower menu on the right. Here you will see all the files or folders that you can consult or open even when you don’t have Internet.
