Scalable, secure, cost-transparent – IT managers in Germany have long recognized the advantages of cloud computing, as an investigation by Bitkom shows. Three out of four companies today rely on cloud services; not least to use data more efficiently.
But after BI, ERP & Co. are increasingly running on the cloud, the decisive phase begins. Because: If you rely on the wrong infrastructure, you may end up losing out and stay on your mountain of data.
Especially in the current time, companies have to look closely at which IT framework they choose. On the one hand, the corona lockdown clearly showed how important the cloud can be for the continuation of everyday operations. On the other hand, the business success of many companies is uncertain in the next few years, so that IT managers cannot afford to experiment. In addition, there has been the maxim that has been resonating for years to finally value its data thanks to AI & Co.
There is no question: the balancing act between data usage, flexibility and cost transparency is not an easy one. Oh, and was there something else for sure? However challenging the current situation may be for one or the other IT manager, he is well advised to keep a cool head – and to learn from the transformation of pioneers.
Oracle and bofrost *, for example, show how a successful large-scale cloud project can work. Europe’s largest direct food retailer has moved its entire data warehouse to the Oracle Cloud within 15 months.
A look at the numbers shows the scope: The bofrost * Data Warehouse creates over 2.5 billion new data records annually. If one were to put one line on a sheet of A4 paper per data record, the stack would be around three kilometers high. It goes without saying that the definition of availability, performance and service level agreements play a central role in such a large-scale project.
One thing is certain: If you want to successfully move into the data age, you need knowledge and a good plan.
