Despite the pandemic: Apple closes third quarter with record results

Apple seems to be surviving the COVID-19 pandemic financially quite well – at least that is what the financial figures announced on Thursday evening allow. Because the months of May to June 2020 are the strongest third quarter in terms of sales in the company’s history. Apple raised $ 59.7 billion in that period, nearly $ 6 billion more than a year ago. All business sectors end with a plus.

Quarterly figures for Q3 2020 sales

iPhones with a little plus

This plus is the smallest for iPhones. Apple was able to turn over $ 26.4 billion in the third quarter with its smartphone, at least around $ 500 million more than a year ago. The fact that there is a plus for this product line was even a surprise for Apple, as Apple boss Tim Cook explains. Because the company had assumed a decline in iPhone sales.

The new iPhone SE should have made its contribution. After all, while demand suffered mainly in April due to the COVID 19 pandemic, sales rose sharply in May and June. Cook describes the launch of the new low-cost iPhone as “particularly successful”.

iPad, Mac & accessories

Other divisions also contributed to the positive result. Mac sales increased from $ 5.8 billion to $ 7.1 billion, iPad sales increased from $ 5 billion to $ 6.6 billion. The “Wearables, Home & Accessories” product category, which includes products such as the Apple Watch, Apple TV, AirPods, HomePod, Beats and other accessories, has sales of $ 6.5 billion – an increase of around one billion dollars.

Services are increasing significantly, but …

There is also a clear plus in the Services division, which includes various areas such as the App Store, iCloud, AppleCare, Apple Music and other services. Revenue rose year-on-year from $ 11.5 billion to $ 13.2 billion.

A small “but” has to be noted in the otherwise new record numbers of the services division. Because for the first time in over two years, sales in the Services division did not increase compared to the previous quarter. From January to March 2020 there were 13.3 billion, the mentioned 13.2 billion now from April to June.

Statement by Tim Cook

“Apple’s record June quarter was driven by double-digit growth in both products and services and in each of our geographic regions,” said Cook. “In uncertain times, this achievement is testament to the vital role our products play in our customers’ lives and Apple’s tireless innovation. This is a challenging moment for our society. From Apple’s new $ 100 million initiative for justice and equality for all people up to the obligation to be climate neutral by 2030, we live by the principle that everything we do should create opportunities and leave the world better than we found it. “
