After we were able to learn new details at the beginning of April about the alleged presentation date of the new Apple headphones, information about the design and some features of the “Over-Ear AirPods” now follow.

Apple’s over-ear headphones: magnets for ear cups and headband

Once again, it is Mark Gurman who reveals new features of previously unseen hardware for Bloomberg. For several years there have been reports that Apple is working on its own over-ear headphones, which are to be offered independently of Beats products under its own brand. According to Gurman, the Cupertino company is currently working on at least two different variants.

This includes a premium version in which leather-like fabrics are to be used. Another variant is more for fitness fans. Lighter materials should be available here, which should be more breathable thanks to small perforations and are therefore better suited for use in sports.

The design of the prototypes is referred to as “retro” by Gurman’s sources. The moveable ear cups should have an oval shape and be connected to the headband via thin metal bars. This is where a special feature of Apple’s over-ear headphones begins.

According to Bloomberg, not only should the ear cups be easily replaced by the user thanks to integrated magnets – and thus enable a simple change between leather and other fabrics and designs. The upholstery attached to the headband should also be easy to change thanks to a magnetic attachment.

If you don’t want to wait for the over-ear headphones, you can already get the expected technology including noise canceling in the AirPods Pro – here is a comparison of the small in-ear headphones:

Apple over-ear headphones: launch in a few weeks?

A few days ago, Apple Leaker Jon Prosser reported that Apple is targeting June for the launch of the new headphones. Specifically, it should be a presentation as part of the WWDC. The price of the iPhone manufacturer is said to be based on the competition from Bose, which charges around $ 350 for the Bose 700.

Apple’s new headphones are said to have been in development since at least 2018. At the same time, a show had also been postponed at least twice. The Coronavirus crisis could shift the schedule again. On the one hand, one of Apple’s selected partners in China, Goertek Inc., is not yet fully operational. On the other hand, the necessary homework by Apple employees in California could also delay the testing of the hardware.
