Disney exceeds 100 million subscribers and announces the arrival of Mulan

Disney continues to make its way through VOD platforms, accumulating more than 100 million subscribers in its video transmission services. This has been revealed by the company itself in its third quarter earnings report. Specifically the figure would add the 57.5 million Disney + customers, along with 8.5 million ESPN (compared to 2.5 million a year ago) and 35.5 million Hulu (compared to 27.9 million the previous year).

And is that as with many transmission providers, it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has served as a good push so that users hire more leisure options on demand; But beyond that, the truth is that Disney + has undoubtedly achieved a really promising initial takeoff, with one of the fastest growth on the market.

Thus, although the startup of Disney + was more powerful than expected, it is still far from the rest of the platforms: Netflix continues to be the leader, no longer so indisputable, with approximately 193 million users; very followed by Amazon Prime Video, which already has more than 150 million users; and HBO, that after the end of Game of Thrones, seems to have been relegated to the thing.

However, this does not seem to have been sufficient to maintain the company’s figures, which, reporting revenues of $ 11.8 billion during the last quarter, would have experienced a decrease of up to 42% compared to last year. And it is that the closure of its parks in recent months, including one of the most important holiday periods of the year, seems to have been a serious blow.

Disney + Mulan

So much so, that the company announced today that will finally release his new Mulan movie on Disney +, so anyone who subscribes to Disney + will have access to the film before it is released in theaters. Although we can’t really speak of good news for fans, as the film will be available under a new “rental” service, and an additional price of $ 29.99 that will allow us unlimited access to it. A movement that, although it is clear is intended to cover the lost profits of its premiere in theaters, it still seems to us totally out of orbit.

Luckily, it seems that at the moment it is about an exceptional measure stemming from the pandemic, and not the entry of a new model for the rest of his films: «We are seeing Mulan as something unique, instead of trying to say that we are seeing a new model of commercial window«. Although the statements of the company advance since perhaps we can see it repeated in one of the closest major releases, «we find it very interesting to be able to take a new offer, our main access offer, to consumers at that price and learn from it«.
