Edox means Timing in ancient Greek. The Swiss watch company based in Les Genevez entered the watch industry in the 1880s and has been celebrating in the industry for more than 135 years. Despite multiple transfers of ownership, the company continues to thrive with its commitment to innovation and traditional manual assembly.
Today Edox is best known for its reliable waterproof timepieces. And while they may not be as popular as other Swiss watch brands, at the end of this post you will find that this mid-range brand actually has a lot of great timepieces to offer.
Edox brand history
How it all started
The Edox watch brand was founded by a watchmaker named Christian Rüefli-Flury, who grew up in Grenchen, Switzerland. Before founding his brand, he was an apprentice with Jean Ægler until 1883. In 1884, he was encouraged by his wife Pauline Flury to found their own watch company after giving her a pocket watch for his birthday.
In the same year Christian Rüefli-Flury founded his own watch company called Edox in Biel, Switzerland. It was not until 1900 that the brand began using the hourglass logo that it still uses today.
Transitions and expansion
With the death of Rüefli-Flury in 1921, the banker Robert Kaufmann-Hug took over the company. The brand continued to grow as the watch market started looking for wristwatches instead of pocket watches. and Edox was the only watch manufacturer to focus on wristwatches at that time. As such, Edox became a limited liability company in 1927.
The watchmaker company in Biel has continued to grow over a few years and has to move to a larger factory. Edox was also named among the leading watch companies in Switzerland in 1955.
Dolphin, bluebird and geoscope
In 1961, Edox introduced its first revolutionary watch – the dolphin. The crown has a double seal to increase water resistance. Therefore, the watch is waterproof up to 500 meters. Such a design was patented by Edox and became the reason why the brand is known worldwide for waterproof timepieces. In fact, the patented design is still used by major Swiss watch brands.
Another notable watch from Edox is the Bluebird. It was introduced in 1969 as a highly resistant watch that is also waterproof. It consists of hardened stainless steel, double case back and shock absorbers.
The following year, 1970, Edox released the Geoscope, which is considered the first real GMT watch. The dial even contains a copy of a realistic globe on which you can identify the continents. The dial then turns like the planet. Because of its unique style, it has become one of the most sought-after collectibles among watch lovers and collectors.
Acquisition and independence
Like many watchmakers, Edox was hit hard by the quartz crisis and struggled to stay in business. In 1973, the company was forced to sell its shares to the association of Swiss watchmakers ASUAG (now the Swatch Group). Still, ASUAG Edox still couldn’t revive.
For this reason, the then president of the company, Victor Strambini, decided in 1983 to buy back all Edox shares from ASUAG. The company became independent again and Strambini decided to focus on the dynamic, elegance and technical innovation of the brand to restore it.
Over the past decades, Edox has been the official timekeeper for various racing events such as the Class 1 Motorboat World Championship, the World Rally Championship, the Dakar Rally, the Extreme Sailing Series and the World Curling Federation.
Edox watch collections
The CO-1 collection was specially developed and manufactured for Pal Virik Nilsen, an offshore motor boat racing driver. As such, CO-1 watches are accurate, reliable, and stylish sports watches.
In order to meet the standards and requirements of a motorboat racer, CO-1 models are strategically built from high-quality materials such as ceramic covers, stainless steel housings and rubber bands. Depending on the model, you can also choose whether you want a mechanical or a quartz-powered watch. The case size includes three-hand watches for men with a 43 mm case and a 38 mm case for women.
There are also models with chronograph functions and 45 mm cases. The brand promises that all cases for this collection are made of ultra-solid construction. They also have an offshore boat propeller engraved on the back. Depending on the model, they also have a water resistance of 300 m or 500 m. In addition, CO-1 timepieces are equipped with an automatic helium valve so that they are also suitable for deep-sea diving.
The Chronoral collection was launched on the occasion of the partnership between Edox and the FIA WRC (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile World Rallycross Championship). As such, Edox became the WRC’s official timing partner.
Accordingly, Chronoral watches are designed to withstand the abuse of extreme races and remain absolutely accurate and functional. They have titanium cases with a size of 48 mm and an easy to read dial. Since they were developed for races, timepieces are not the best choice in terms of water resistance, as they are only up to 100 meters high.
Dolphin The Original
As already mentioned, dolphin plays an important role in the brand history. No wonder the dolphin collection has been revived several times. The latest is Delfin The Original. Delfin The Original is still the champion of the waterproof watch brand.
It is also one of Edox’s most extensive collections as it includes chronographs, divers, day / date, and simple three-hand watches. However, they all have a special shock-absorbing housing base and double O-ring seals for crowns and pushers for increased water resistance.
If you need a watch for extreme water sports, the Grand Ocean is the collection to go to. Grand Ocean watches are characterized by a balanced mix of performance and style. They’re not just elegant; They are also accurate, reliable and equipped with numerous functions that are required for your regattas, yachts and similar races. You won’t be disappointed with the water resistance either, as they are up to 500 meters long.
The four collections mentioned above are classified as sports instruments because they are great timepieces for their special sporting event. The latter, the Les Vauberts collection, is classified under Style and elegance.
Les Vauberts watches belong to this category and are characterized by classic elegance with mechanical or quartz movements made in Switzerland. If you’re curious, the collection is actually named after a small area near Les Genevez, where farmers became watchmakers during the summer season in the winter months.
They also became the pioneers of the watch industry. On the caseback of the Les Vauberts watches you can see a historic farmhouse that symbolizes the building in which the farmers who became watchmakers made the watches during these winter months.
Edox brand reputation
As you may have seen from the collections above, Edox manufactures a variety of timepieces designed for different purposes and preferences. But if there’s one thing that makes Edox stand out, it is Water resistance. As mentioned above, Edox was first recognized for the dolphin. Even back then, Edox continued to innovate to improve the water resistance of its products.
Even as a mid-range watch brand, Edox is valued for the production of high-quality timepieces. The materials used are of the highest quality, the timekeeping is reliable and accurate, the styles have a twist and every watch is hand-assembled. For this reason, watch lovers and even ordinary buyers were immediately captured and amazed by this not so popular brand. Edox watches are worth every dollar spent.
Is Edox A good watch brand?
Edox is not just good. After this discussion, it is “Good, very, very good.” Although less well known than other Swiss watch brands, the build quality, price and style of Edox watches can certainly keep up with these popular watches.
With more than 130 years of experience in the watch industry, the brand can be seen as an expert in technical innovations. This is particularly evident in the build quality of their watches. In addition to the use of high-quality materials, the brand’s innovations made it possible to produce exceptionally waterproof timepieces.
