This year, users of some Samsung smartphones should be able to integrate their electronic ID card into the phone.
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Bundesdruckerei and Deutsche Telekom Security worked together with the smartphone market leader for this. The solution will be launched as soon as the mobile eID process is available in Germany, as Samsung announced on Thursday. Devices of the Galaxy S20 series are the first to have this function.
The mobile eID solution was developed as part of the OPTIMOS 2.0 funding project. His goal was “to standardize the necessary components, interfaces and processes so that the technology developed meets high security standards and is available to as many end users as possible,” said BSI boss Arne Schönbohm.
To set up, users must install Bundesdruckerei’s ID card app and hold their NFC-enabled ID card on the back of the smartphone to confirm their identity. In the future, the possibility is planned to also embed other important documents such as a driver’s license or health insurance card in the smartphone.
