Gartner on the Public Cloud: Desktop as a Service is booming

The volume of the global public cloud market is expected to grow to $ 257.9 billion in 2020, Gartner analysts predict. Compared to the previous year, this would mean an increase of 6.3 percent. The area of desktop-as-a-service can grow the most – albeit on the basis of a comparatively manageable total volume. According to Gartner, global DaaS business is expected to almost double to around $ 1.2 billion this year. The next doubling in this segment to a good $ 2.5 billion could be expected by 2022.

The strong growth is due to the consequences of the corona crisis and the resulting migration of many office workers to the home office. DaaS offers a cost-effective option for companies to support the increasing number of remote employees and their need for secure access to corporate applications from different devices and locations, the analysts stated. “When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, there were a few startup difficulties, but the cloud did what it was supposed to do,” said Sid Nag, research vice president at Gartner.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) accounts for the lion’s share of the public cloud market, which is expected to total just under $ 105 billion this year. This corresponds to over 40 percent of the entire public cloud market. However, according to Gartner, the SaaS business will only grow moderately in 2020 with an increase of 2.5 percent. Business is only expected to pick up speed again in the coming years – in 2021 with an increase of almost 16 percent to just under $ 121 billion, and in 2022 by a further 16 percent to over $ 140 billion.
