The Coen brothers travel back in time to Golden Hollywood in their comedy “Hail, Caesar!” The film is celebrating its German free TV premiere tonight. It’s getting weird!
Hollywood in 1951: studio manager Eddie Mannix works for Capitol Pictures. His job is to keep the image of his actors and actresses clean. But now he’s struggling with all sorts of problems. His star Baird Whitlook is kidnapped. Filming for the new, prestigious monumental film “Hail, Caesar!” Is stalled. Mannix must do everything possible to find his star again. And then there are all the other scandals in the film studios …
Joel and Ethan Coen have developed into real cult directors with works such as “Fargo” and “No Country For Old Men”. In her comedy “Hail, Caesar!” You shouldn’t expect a story told in a stringent way. Instead, you can watch big stars like George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Josh Brolin, Tilda Swinton and Scarlett Johansson play through one bizarre situation through the other. When could you see it in a film in which Channing Tatum puts a wild musical number on the stage in one scene and Scarlett Johannson quarrels with her artificial fish tail in another than a miserable mermaid?
The film was already released in German cinemas in 2016. In the same year “Hail, Caesar!” Was also allowed to open the Berlinale. The comedy can be seen on ZDF this evening from 11.25 p.m.
