how to choose the Microsoft Surface that best suits your needs

by Tejas Dhawan

With the launch of the Surface line eight years ago, Microsoft made one of the most important decisions of the last decades: compete face to face with the big hardware companies, even at the expense of their own OEM partners.

Timidly in the first generations and much more shameless in recent years, those of Redmond have managed to build a portfolio of products with their own personality and which have become the reference to enjoy the news that is periodically introduced in Windows 10.

So many that first-time users of the Surface line may find it difficult to choose the equipment that best suits what they need. And it is that except that they include the word “Surface” in their name, devices like the Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Pro X, do not have too much in common. In this little guide we show you some keys that you have to take into account.

If you are looking for a good laptop: Surface Laptop 3

A powerful and lightweight laptop with which you can work all day without problems. Most people don’t need more. It is the idea that has made the Apple MacBook Air has become one of the most popular computers in history and it is what you will find in the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3.

The Microsoft ultraportable left very good feelings in its passage through our technical laboratory a few months ago. Like the rest of the Surface line, the Laptop 3 stands out for its extreme care design, the use of the highest quality materials and a spectacular screen that translates in this case to a resolution of 2496 x 1664 in 15 ″.

That Microsoft has opted for a 3: 2 arrangement indicates that we are facing a machine designed by and for productivity and putting a but, we would have to highlight some connectivity options that are somewhat limited, offering only a USB-C port and a USB-A port. As an architecture, Microsoft offers us the possibility to choose between AMD and Intel. If we need an extra power, our recommendation is Intel, although the equipment will cost us a little more.

Price: from 1,220 euros.

For those who need total mobility: Surface Pro 7

With the launch of Microsoft Surface Pro 2In Redmond, they began to glimpse a promising future for their almost recently launched professional hardware division. The product was not only of quality but it was beginning to be liked by managers, who found in Microsoft’s 2 in 1 a really interesting product, capable of combining power and portability.

The criticism would finally surrender to Microsoft with the launch of the Microsoft Surface 4 to, from that model, bet on a continuist design that looks great in this Microsoft Surface Pro 7 that we recommend.

Ideal for professionals who have more mobility needs and who do not want to give up the possibilities offered by a tablet, the latest from Microsoft in this segment introduces great new hardware compared to the previous generation. Among the most important, highlights the jump to the tenth generation Intel Core processors (Ice Lake at 10 nm) and the inclusion of the long-awaited USB Type-C port. The base configuration of this two in one includes a Core i3-1005G1, 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD, although we can expand it to mount a Core i7-1065G7, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

Price: from 899 euros.

For those who need all the power: Surface Book 3

If we previously compared the Surface Laptop 3 with the MacBook Air, the Surface Book 3 could compete without problems with the most powerful of the MacBook Pro, with several interesting points that also tip the balance in its favor, such as a removable screen and one of the best keyboards we’ve tested to date on a laptop.

Surface Book 3 uses the 10th generation Core “Ice Lake” processors, “U” series low-voltage models. It is the Intel’s most advanced architecture and the only one of the company that until now is manufactured in technological processes of 10 nanometers. It is an ideal processor for a hybrid device that we are going to use on the move and on the desktop and that does not give up a bit of power.

Its 32 Gbytes of LPDDR4x RAM and the PCIe NVMe solid state drive for internal storage installed are a guarantee of performance, while the dedicated NVIDIA graphics located in the base allows us to work fluently on the desktop, for computing tasks. , entertainment, editing, development and also games … with autonomy that, if we limit ourselves to the basics, can last up to fifteen hours.

Price: from 1,799 euros.

To study and navigate: Surface Go 2

Microsoft Surface Go 2 is the cheapest device you can find in the Surface line and is designed for all those users who do not ask too much of their laptop: that it is light, that it has good autonomy and that it complies with basic tasks such as office, email and Internet browsing. If you don’t need anything else, congratulations, the Surface Go 2 is the best you can find in this niche. If you also want to complete the experience with a tablet, don’t think twice.

Surface Go 2 is the best Windows tablet experience you can find. Its quality of construction and finishes is fantastic, well above the segment average and at the level of other Surface models. Light and thin, it can be transported anywhere and its screen is of a high level in both image quality and response.

Microsoft markets the Surface Go 2 in various hardware configurations, starting with a base version made up of an Intel Pentium 4425Y processor, 4 Gbytes of RAM and 64 Gbytes of storage capacity. With the same processor, you can go for a version that includes 8 Gbytes of RAM and 128 Gbytes for internal storage.

Price: from 459 euros.

For those who risk: Microsoft Surface Pro X

This year the ARM architecture landed on Windows with the help of Microsoft Surface Pro X, an «experiment» for early adopters that however left us very good feelings.

Face to face, for the quality of the materials used, for design and construction and for technical characteristics, the Surface Pro X Compete directly against Apple iPad Pro. And it does it really well: with surprising speed, great power to process graphics and autonomy very similar to what we can expect from the Apple team. And if it competes in practically all fields with the iPad Pro, also offering a desktop operating system, it also does (and we believe with almost the best possible score) with the entire segment of convertibles and even ultraportable Windows.

What is the problem, then? That experiments must be paid for. And with a starting price that starts at 980 euros, we would expect more compatibility with all kinds of applications and right now, not so many developers have “dared” to port their programs to the ARM architecture. But if after studying the “panorama” we discover that our needs are covered, let no one doubt it: what Microsoft gives us is a fantastic machine.

Price: from 977 euros.
