Hugo Boss or BOSS is a German fashion house that produces clothing, shoes, fragrances, accessories and watches. In this article we will take a closer look at the brand – its history, collections and reputation. Along the way, we also contain links through which you can purchase certain models.
The brand is not really known for watches, but it markets them along with many other accessories. Hugo Boss mainly sells clothes and fragrances, so his watches are considered by many to be fashion watches. Boss watches are generally ignored by serious watch lovers and are hardly discussed in comparison to many other watch brands in the same price range. Some readers therefore ask us about a general perspective of the brand. Hugo Boss is of course highly regarded in the designer fashion world, but should a reader who wants to buy a new watch drop a few hundred dollars or more on a Boss watch?
We’ll first give a general overview of the brand, as well as some points to consider and comparison points for many of the other brands we’ve covered.

Boss – Hugo Boss brand history
The company was founded in 1924 by the fashion designer and businessman Hugo Ferdinand Boss and two partners in Metzingen and supplied general-purpose work clothes, sportswear, jackets, shirts etc. The brand filed for bankruptcy in 1931 due to the economic climate in the country. In the same year, Boss became a member of the NSDAP and sold his uniforms in the 1930s, which increased sales.
After the Second World War and the denazification process in the country, Boss was classified as a supporter of the group and faced with fines such as fines and deprivation of voting rights. Boss died of an illness in 1948 and his son-in-law Eugen Holy then took over the company.
In 2011, the company released a statement saying that it “deeply regrets those who suffered damage or hardship in Hugo Boss’ Nazi-era factory.” The apology coincided with the publication of a new company history during the Hitler years, which the brand itself commissioned. You can read more about it here. The book entitled “Hugo Boss, 1924-1945” is a report that tells the story of the role of the brand in Nazi Germany. In this Time article, author Roman Köster is quoted as saying that his impression is that the company “is really interested in solving the problem”.
After the war, the brand experienced a period in which mainly work clothes and later men’s suits were produced, which became a great success in the 60s and 70s and later finished “Boss” suits were branded.
In the 80s, Boss started selling fragrances, then sunglasses, and finally other accessories such as watches. Boss watches are manufactured by Movado under a license agreement – if you want to understand this better Movado – see our brand overview here.
Boss – Hugo Boss watch collections
There are two main categories of watches: Boss and Hugo. Below are some of the most popular and latest models from each brand.

Over 80 watches are available on the Boss line of Hugo Boss. The new Boss collection currently offers timepieces for men and women.
Boss watches are intended for business and vacation watches. They can be worn with something as formal as a business suit, but can also be worn casually with jeans. The line has a large selection of chronograph models, such as the Ocean Edition Chrono, a stainless steel dive-style watch with a water resistance of up to 100 m. This has a blue dial and a rotating bezel as well as bright color details.
There’s also the more casual 44mm Skymaster model, a pilot-inspired chronograph with a leather strap, a brushed stainless steel case, and Arabic numerals.
Then there is the women’s line. A simple but eye-catching model is this watch with a Swarovski crystal bezel and a sunray dial, a 34mm watch with a yellow gold dial and a stainless steel bracelet. Another elegant model is the Twilight, a 36 mm watch with gold-plated carnations, minimalist dial (without markings), thin hands and a mesh bracelet.
There are slightly larger chronograph models such as the Premiere model, which also has a clove gilding with three structured subdials. It has a curved bezel, a sun-brushed dial and a hand-sewn bracelet.
Aside from the Boss watches for women, which feature what the brand calls “curved lines and crystal elements alongside striking twisted bar details”, there is also the Boss jewelry line, which is usually for both the day and the Evening has an elegant, minimalist design. You can check it out here.

The Hugo line watches have a sporty design – large watch models that are “more masculine”, as the brand suggests.
One of these models is a black plated stainless steel watch, a 44mm watch with a multi-eye mechanism. It has three unique subdials, including a cut out design that allows you to see the inside of the watch, and a record design.
This collection also includes a series of unmarked statement watches, just an inverted “HUGO” logo on the dial, like this unisex model with a white silicone strap. Other versions of it include a camouflage pattern and a more minimalistic matte black.
There are also models with a leather strap, such as this 43 mm watch with a contrast dial, stainless steel case and yellow gold finish. The second hand has a letter H on top and the bracelet is made of tanned leather with a distressed finish.

Boss – Hugo Boss brand reputation
As a designer brand, they are primarily known for fashion watches.
These watches usually have quartz movements in the lower price range and focus mainly on the overall look and style.
They prefer to focus on the mechanics, functions and craftsmanship of a particular watch. Serious watch buyers prefer brands with a long watch history and tend to discard designer watches like Gucci, Armani, Dior or other similar brands, and think fashion watches are quite overpriced.
After all, this argument could be said about most designer clothes and accessories. The increased price is largely due to the perceived value of the logo, especially if you find other brands in the same price range that use better movements and have a long history of making serious watches.
Some that come to mind as alternatives are Seiko, Orient or Citizen.
However, if you’re a fan of designer accessories, admire luxury designers, and have the boastful right to have your logo on your wrist, we don’t want to distract you from Boss.
For many of us, watches don’t always have toWatchmaking”- if it can be so easy to find a style we like, or even consider watches as a piece of jewelry.

Where is Boss – Hugo Boss made?
According to a comment in this Quora article, Hugo Boss watches are made in China by OEMs. It explains that Movado, a respected company, produces decent products with better pieces and finishes. The comment mentions that a Japanese watch like Seiko or Citizen can get a better quality watch for the same amount, but a Hugo Boss watch would still do if you like the watch and style.
The Hugo Boss website does not specify where the watches are made. However, in this discussion in the watch forum, it is mentioned that the brand can have both Chinese and Swiss watch movements.
