Microsoft is expanding its portfolio. In addition to laptops, tablets, consoles and various software, they now also want to get a foot in the door in the smartphone sector with the Surface Duo. However, the new folding cell phone will not be a price breaker, as an official blog entry confirms.
Microsoft Surface Duo: New folding phone costs $ 1,400
While the market launch of the Surface Neo seems unpredictable, the Microsoft Surface Duo is practically around the corner. An official blog entry by the company shows that the first devices should go on sale as early as September 10th. However, the price of the clamshell phone has it all. A mere 1,399 US dollars, which is the equivalent of around 1,190 euros, is what Microsoft wants for its new folding smartphone.
However, if you take a look at the prices of the competition, the device from Microsoft seems almost cheap. The just presented Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 should cost around 2,100 euros, the Huawei Mate Xs even costs more than 2,400 euros.
About a year ago Microsoft officially presented the Surface Duo in the form of a video:
Folding cell phone from Microsoft: Hardware guesswork continues
What the blog entry sorely misses is information about the installed hardware. Although there have been numerous leaks and rumors in advance about the specifications, there has been no official confirmation from Microsoft so far. If the reports come true, however, the “modern” folding cell phone doesn’t even contain modern hardware.
For example, the Snapdragon 855 should be used as the processor, which is flanked by 6 GB of RAM. 256 GB of internal memory offer enough space for numerous pictures and videos that are recorded by the 11 MP camera. The 3,460 mAh battery should be emptied relatively quickly due to the two 5.6-inch OLED displays.
Folding cell phones are just one of the most important technology milestones of the last 10 years:
What is also noticeable negatively: According to current reports, neither the new 5G standard nor NFC is supported. If the latter is correct, the Surface Duo does not have the option of contactless payment. This should be a knockout criterion for many today.
