The Springer flagship “Bild” is increasingly relying on moving image content and is thus transforming itself into online TV – now Sport1 could be another important division.

It is not the first time that such a rumor has spread, as early as 2017 the takeover of the sports channel by the large media group Axel Springer was relatively tangible. It did not happen after all – and even now a possible incorporation of the moving image division of Sport1 by the Springer empire on the part of the broadcaster is denied.

However, this is not enough to stop speculation – this is how the column “Medienmacher” of the “Berliner Zeitung” already sees almost unmistakable signs for such a movement: An indication should be the announced obligation of the former RTL boss Frank Hoffmann, who is still in the current year take over the reins at the Springer company WeltN24 GmbH. For the author of the column, citing industry insiders, it is almost clear that Springer is planning something big in the moving image segment.

In addition, the transformation of the online content of Springer media, most strikingly “image”, to moving image offers in combination with the acquisition of rights for the highlights of upcoming Bundesliga seasons constitutes a starting point in which Sport1 with its basic program and talk formats how “double pass” could become a key factor. In addition to the Springer publishing house, a few years ago Pay-TV broadcaster Sky showed interest in Sport1 – however, no agreement was reached at that time with either of the two prominent bidders.
