You may have heard about the remote desktop function of Windows 10. Thanks to this great tool it is possible to connect to your home computer from any other device when you are away. As you can imagine, the flexibility that this allows us to consult files or edit them when we are not in front of the computer is enormous.
Therefore, if you do not know how to use it or do not know it yet, in this article we will show you how enable Windows 10 remote desktop to make remote connections.
How to enable Windows 10 remote desktop
Follow these steps to enable remote desktop from your Windows 10 PC:
- To get started, you will have to access the ‘Settings’ menu, by clicking on the button with the cogwheel icon on the start menu with the Windows symbol or simply typing settings in the search bar.
- Then select the ‘System’ option to access the main Windows settings.
- Once there, take a look at the options that you will find in the left sidebar. If you look down, you will see a section that says ‘Remote Desktop’.
- Click on this option, and you will access a new section where the remoto Enable Remote Desktop ’switch appears. It is the only button you will see, in addition to a brief description of what the remote desktop is. It has no loss.
- When you click on it, it will automatically skip a confirmation notice asking if you want to activate it. It’s that easy and fast.
Once confirmed, you just have to connect to the computer using the name given to you in the section ‘How to connect to this team’. We have covered it in the image above, but it would appear located where the red rectangle.
In addition, three additional options will be enabled, which we explain below:
- Keep my computer active for connection when plugged in: Within this first section, you can set the waiting time for the computer screen to turn off or stay in sleep mode.
- Make my PC recognizable on private networks to allow automatic connection from a remote device: This is where you can enable the permissions of the type of networks that we want to access our team (private profile, public or all types of networks).
- Advanced settings: If you want, you also have the option of requesting credentials for those computers that intend to access your host computer. Here it is very important to have the option ‘Require computers use network-level authentication’ activated so that unwanted users cannot connect.

Finally, to connect to your home computer, you will have to install remote desktop app, available in almost all operating systems: Windows 10, Android, iOS and macOS.
One last thing you can also do from the ‘Remote Desktop’ screen, just below the ‘User Accounts’ heading, is click on the blue letters that indicate ‘Select the users who can remotely access this computer. ’
Next, a window will open that will allow you to add the email addresses of those users one by one. you want them to connect to the computer exclusively.
