Microsoft launches Windows 10 Insider Channels

They replace the rings that were previously available. Microsoft also decouples the Dev Channel from a specific upcoming Windows 10 release. Microsoft is now primarily collecting feedback for a new function update via the Beta Channel.

Microsoft has implemented the recently announced changes for the Windows Insider Program. Channels are now replacing the release rings previously offered. The changeover itself takes place automatically and without user intervention.

Insiders who previously subscribed to the Fast Ring or Skip Ahead Ring can now be found on the Dev Channel. “Ideal for tech-savvy users,” Microsoft now describes the pre-release versions distributed over it. “Be the first and at the earliest possible point in the development cycle to access the latest Windows 10 builds with the latest code. Things will not go smoothly and stability may be poor. ”

Microsoft generally recommends the beta channel, which replaces the slow ring. In addition, the so-called early adopters are to be served, who specifically want to contribute to the further development of Windows with their feedback. Microsoft also promises that the builds in the beta channel will be more reliable than in the dev channel, as they will be checked in advance by Microsoft.

If you are only interested in the new functions planned for general publication, you should opt for the Release Preview Channel, which corresponds to the previous Release Preview Ring. “Access the upcoming release of Windows 10 before it is released to the public. ”In the Release Preview Channel, Microsoft is also testing the extended quality updates for the current Windows 10 release.

The innovations and changes tested in the Dev Channel are not assigned to a special release. They can be implemented in the next function update or in an upcoming servicing update. The Beta Channel and the Release Preview Channel are linked to an upcoming release like 20H2 or 21H1.

According to Microsoft, the Dev Channel and the Beta Channel are not suitable for productive use. The company only offers official support for the Release Preview Channel.

The option to switch between the available channels at any time has not changed. The option can be found in the Settings app in the Update and Security area under the Windows Insider program. The currently used channel is also displayed there.
