Microsoft Surface Duo, the new smart mobile phone in a folding format, has this week obtained certifications from the US communications regulator FCC and also from the group responsible for the wireless standard, Bluetooth SIG. Launch confirmed can go ahead on what was originally planned.
Surface Duo is the device most expected from Microsoft’s own line of hardware. And it is saying a lot taking into account the number of different models and the level that these Microsoft Surface have reached.
The certifications, necessary before putting any device on the market, confirm what we have been giving you. FCC points to a smart phone with model number 1930 and version 10 of Android. The document talks about a device with two screens and four settings depending on whether it is folded or open.
It also reveals other key connectivity details. It will not have 5G, but it will support LTE bands from all the main operators in the US It will have NFC and WiFi 5 (802.11ac) and by the GIS certification we know that it will offer Bluetooth 5.0.
There are no official data of the rest of the characteristics. Considering it won’t support 5G, the Snapdragon 855 it prevails as the most propagible chipset. The 865 and its advanced variant Plus are already on the market, but it was the top of the range for 2019 and we believe that it will be more than enough for this terminal, combined with 6 Gbytes of RAM and versions from 64 to 256 Gbytes for internal storage.
Its design is known, with two independent displays linked by a 360-degree, drop-down hinge as if it were an open book. The screens would be 5.6-inch AMOLEDs with a resolution of 1800 x 1350 pixels. The fingerprint sensor will be located under the screen, it will have front and rear cameras, and its battery will have a capacity of 3,460 mAh.
Microsoft Surface Duo: an Android, but totally tuned
Android stands out in the software section and in fact, Surface Duo will be the only Microsoft own-brand device without a Windows operating system. Although a group of users requested on Change.org a version with Windows 10X (such as the Surface Neo), Microsoft did not want to take risks on its return to mobile telephony and has opted for the Google system.
But it will not be a typical Android. It will have its own launcher, its own user interface and all Microsoft services and apps (Bing, Edge, Office …) replacing those of Google. When the Surface Duo was announced, there was talk of launching at Christmas 2020, but all the information that comes to us indicates that it will be available before.
