Monday Mods: Amnesia: The Dark Descent Remastered

An extensive mod, which is to remaster the entire game, was released for the classic psychological horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent in the form of Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Remastered. With extensive work on reworking each texture, implementing physics-based rendering, and a newly implemented shadow system, this is a very comprehensive mod. The goal of this mod is to bring the game up to date with a more modern aesthetic and visual presentation style, some Introduce new functions and optimize the overall design a bit.

Check out this comparison trailer that shows the difference in graphics between the original version of the game and this new mod.

This project has been under development since 2016 and is now finally available in its finished form. There have been some previous revisions to this mod that had some bugs and incompatibilities, but they have now been worked out to be ready for prime time.

Here are the fairly simple installation instructions:

  1. Drag and drop the “Amnesia The Dark Descent” folder into:
Programs (x86) Steam steamapps common (put them in the “common” folder and replace all files)
  2. Drag & drop the “main_settings.cfg” file into:
Users Documents Amnesia Main (put it in the main folder and replace the file)

This applies to the Steam version. The instructions are the same for other versions, but the exact folder instructions are different.

In one of the most rewarding answers for any mod maker, the developer of the original game, Frictional Games, intervened with his thoughts on this mod. They have long been passionate supporters of their mod community and have a well-deserved reputation for being in touch with their players. It is therefore not surprising that they are on the cutting edge for this mod. On the Reddit side of the game, developer Frictional Games posted the following:

“The amount of work that has to be done is impressive! We will post this on our Mod Showcase channel on Discord! “

Because this mod uses more sophisticated visual effects and rendering techniques than the original game, a more modern GPU is needed. The recommended minimum GPU is a GTX 1050, on which the mod has been tested most extensively. Depending on your exact settings, your resolution, etc., you may need a more powerful GPU.

If you want to try this mod, the base game is currently extremely cheap as part of the Steam Sale, but only for a few days. Check out our other recommendations from the Steam Sale here.
