As expected, the Norwegian online marketplace Adevinta has won the multi-billion dollar advertising division from Ebay.
The purchase price for the division with portals such as eBay classifieds and mobile.de is $ 9.2 billion (€ 8.0 billion), the two companies announced on Tuesday in Oslo and San José. The takeover creates the world’s largest online advertising market. Adevinta won the bidding race against a consortium of financial investors and the investment company Prosus from the media group Naspers.
However, Adevinta does not want to pay the majority of the amount in cash, but with its own shares. Ebay is said to receive only $ 2.5 billion in cash. In this way, Ebay becomes the new major shareholder of Adevinta with a stake of 44 percent – and thus remains in the advertising business. Adevinta’s previous majority owner, the media group Schibsted, wants to agree to the deal, according to the information.
In the future, he should only have a third of Adevinta, instead of 59 percent.
