OnePlus presented its new smartphone generation under the motto “Lead with Speed”. The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro models should appeal to buyers primarily with their performance, a powerful main camera and the 90 Hz fluid display. In Germany, both devices can now be pre-ordered at a price of 699 euros or 899 euros.
Like almost all manufacturers, OnePlus relies on an almost frameless display. The OnePlus 8 is 6.55 inches in size and has a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels, which corresponds to a pixel density of 402 ppi. The OnePlus 8 Pro has 6.78 inches and 3168 by 1440 pixels (513 ppi). Both displays are based on AMOLED technology and support a refresh rate of 90 Hz, which should ensure a particularly fluid display of moving content.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in conjunction with the Adreno 650 GPU and the 5G X55 chipset should ensure the performance advertised by the manufacturer. There is a choice of 8 or 12 GB of RAM, but this only complies with the LPDDR5 standard for the OnePlus Pro. The internal memory is 128 or 256 GB and is based on UFS 3.0.
The batteries specified OnePlus with 4300 or 4510 mAh. The energy storage devices should not only last for a long time, they can also be charged to 50 percent in half an hour using rapid charging technology. The OnePlus 8 Pro is said to reach this charge level after just 23 minutes.
Both smartphones use a triple camera, which is however equipped with different sensors on both models. The centerpiece of the OnePlus 8 is the 48 megapixel Sony sensor IMX586, which offers a pixel size of 0.8 micrometers. He is supported by an ultra-wide-angle lens with 16 megapixels.
The OnePlus 8 Pro takes pictures with the newly developed Sony sensor IMX689, which offers significantly larger pixels at 1.12 micrometers. In addition, the main camera of the OnePlus 8 Pro can combine four pixels to form an even larger pixel, but this reduces the net resolution to 12 megapixels. The OnePlus 8 Pro’s ultra wide-angle lens also resolves 48 megapixels, but uses the smaller IMX586 sensor from Sony. The 8 megapixels of the third camera enable a 3x hybrid zoom and a 30x digital zoom.
In addition to the new 5G mobile radio standard, both smartphones also support LTE, UMTS and GSM. Other features include Wi-Fi 6 (WLAN 802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, GPS, Glonass, Galileo and Beidou. OnePlus also integrates a fingerprint sensor into the display and a USB-C port that supports USB 3.1 into the housing frame. There you will also find the stereo speakers, the sound of which can be improved with Dolby Atmos.
The scope of delivery includes a 30 watt power supply and the required USB charging cable. The OnePlus 8 is available in the colors Onyx Black, Glacial Green and Interstellar Glow. With 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, it costs 699 euros. OnePlus charges 799 euros for 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. For the OnePlus 8 Pro in Onyx Black, users have to spend at least 899 euros. If you want to have the colors Glacial Green or Ultramarine Blue, you have to invest 999 euros and get 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
