The new Raspberry Pi 4 has it all. First is small, offers a decent performance potential as well as various possible uses. Now an alternative PC has emerged, which at first glance could overtake the Pi – but lacks a feature.
XCY Portable Mini PC: This computer is a real power dwarf
The Raspberry Pi is extremely popular with hobbyists all over the world. The single-board computer offers a surprisingly high level of performance without taking up a lot of space. But if that’s all for you, you should probably go for the Portable Mini PC from XCY. As PCMag reports, the tiny computer cube is just 6 x 6 x 4 centimeters in size, but has surprisingly good hardware built in – if you take the size into account.
An Intel Celeron N4100 with four cores is used as the processor, with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM to the side. A 128 GB M.2 SSD serves as the mass storage device. Whether it is an NVMe or SATA model is not clear from the product description. If you want to expand the memory, you can also place a microSD card in the appropriate slot.
The current tech news at a glance:
Speaking of the connections: In addition to the microSD card, two devices can also be connected via classic USB-A plugs. The USB-C port is used for power supply, the HDMI port can be used to connect a monitor, television or projector. There is also a classic jack connection on the back. WLAN and Bluetooth are of course also on board.
Raspberry Pi alternative: for whom is the mini computer worthwhile?
That all sounds great, doesn’t it? But the Rasp Pi alternative also has a small catch. In contrast to the inexpensive Raspberry Pi 4, which even costs just 78 euros in the 8 GB version, the XCY Portable Mini PC with the equipment mentioned costs a whopping 151 euros on AliExpress. This is a reasonable price for the built-in hardware, but very few people interested in the Raspberry Pi will want to spend so much money on an alternative.
Especially since the XCY Portable Mini PC is only suitable to a limited extent for hobbyists, as it does not offer any GPIO pins. What speaks for the small computer, however, is the x86 processor. Thanks to the CPU, Windows 10 can easily be installed on the computer and the corresponding programs can be run. Therefore, the Rasp Pi alternative is much more suitable as a replacement for a classic office computer. In any case, it is amazing to see how many PCs can now be packed into a tiny housing.
