Silicon Macbook, will we see it before the end of the year?

The arrival of the first Silicon Macbook, that is, the first Apple laptop equipped with the new family of processors that were announced in the past WWDC2020, is something very, much awaited by the entire technology community. And it is that, in agreement, it is not the first change given by those of Cupertino in this regard, we have already commented on other occasions. But it is possibly the most disruptive, since when saying goodbye to Intel, it also does it of the compatibility with Windows, something that some people think is a mistake, but that many others consider a great success. And we all agree that it is a path that Apple has been traveling for many years.

And today we know, from Techspot, that we may not have to wait too long for the arrival of the first Silicon Macbook, since this could be produced this year, and not in 2021 as originally thought. According to analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple will launch a new MacBook Air with ARM later this year. However, it does not affirm it emphatically, since it also raises the possibility that this launch will be postponed to the beginning of 2021. In any case, yes, there would be no need to wait for WWDC2021 for its arrival.

The growth of the Macbook Silicon family will undoubtedly take place in 2021, according to the analyst’s forecasts. Following the Macbook Air would come a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a design very similar, if not identical, to the 13-inch model of 2020, that is, it will not have the thinnest bezels of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. A 16-inch MacBook Pro and the 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon would not arrive until the second or third quarter of 2021 (And they could even go to 2022). These newer models could have mini-LED screens.

Ming Chi-Kuo’s report focuses exclusively on Silicon Macbooks, there is not a single word about Apple desktops: Mac Mini, iMac, iMac Pro and Mac Pro. In this case, with almost total security we will have to wait until 2021 is already advanced and, even, it is possible that until 2022. And as for the first desktop system to receive Silicon If Apple follows the model it has carried for its laptops, it is possible that the first computer we see with the new processor is the Mac Mini.

And this is something that reaffirms my doubts about the jump from Intel to ARM, more specifically those related to performance. It makes sense that the first Silicon Macbook is an Air, very respectable notebooks but whose benefits, undoubtedly, are below those offered by the Macbook Pro. That is, we will have to wait until next year to see if Apple has been capable of optimizing the design and squeezing the performance of its ARM chips, so that they can compete with dignity with the current models, equipped with Intel processors. I really want that moment to come, to compare, to see if they have succeeded or, on the contrary, they have made a big mistake.

What do you expect from Macbook Silicon? Do you think they will be able to compete with the current models or, on the contrary, will they lose performance along the way?
