The fraud scandal surrounding the German payment service provider Wirecard is filmed and shown on the TV Now streaming service of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland. The 90-minute documentary drama will be shown in the first quarter of 2021, as the Bertelsmann Content Alliance announced on Thursday.
The Wirecard fraud case, including the company’s bankruptcy near Munich in June, is about air bookings of 1.9 billion euros. The Munich public prosecutor is assuming a “commercial gang fraud”, and has been since 2015. More than three billion euros could be lost.
The documentary drama is said to deal with the circumstances and background of the scandal and the history of the company and its managers. The concept comes from several participants, including the authors of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”, as it went on to say. The “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Thursday) also reported on the film project.
The film production company UFA Fiction, which is part of the Bertelsmann group, is behind the documentary drama, directed by Raymond Ley. The Content Alliance network uses the synergies of the Bertelsmann business areas from media, music and film. In addition to the UFA, the media group RTL Germany, RTL Radio Germany, the Penguin Random House publishing group, the magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr and the music company BMG are also there. The Wirecard project will also result in an audio podcast with several episodes.
