Nowadays, most games already have some online multiplayer mode, although normally these are more focused on keeping as many active players available, normally unknown to each other, than in the cooperative experience itself. That is why, driven also in part by the growing desire to be with our families and friends, we have decided to create a small selection of those we consider to be the best family games currently available.
Before anyone goes to the obvious, it is true that Nintendo is generally the company most focused on this sector of family games (something that in fact will be partly reflected in our own list), but we can still find other options quite interesting with which to replace them, either with some recent releases or previous titles.
Super Mario Party
We can’t talk about family games without mentioning the quintessential mini-game. And it is that the Mario Party saga has always been defined by the diverse amount of tests that each player must do. The objective of the game is to win as many stars as possible and, for this, you have to be victorious in each minigame.
Each player will manage a character from the Mario universe to advance through a board based on winning mini-games. In addition, in this latest edition take advantage of the unique features of the Nintendo Switch to add an extra novelty and fun to its mechanics.
So, although the minigames are not long in themselves, we can stretch the games quite a bit. In addition to the fact that rematches are practically assured, with an almost infinite replayability factor.
Overcooked and Overcooked 2
One of my favorites on this list of family games. With a dynamic as simple as cooking and delivering customer orders, this cooperative game teaches us the great challenge of maintaining order in a kitchen under pressure. It is vital to know how to coordinate with everyone to follow the recipes, as well as not to collide or block the way. Especially when these kitchens are in some settings as crazy as a volcano, the north pole, a haunted house, or moving boats and cars.
And it is that fun is guaranteed, since there always comes a point where the sum of all this becomes in the most chaotic, absurd and fun situations. If you are looking for something nice, funny, but also challenging, you definitely have to try any of these games.
Currently the two installments are available for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One, although it has recently been announced that both will arrive under a single compilation title, adapted and improved for the next generation of consoles.
This excellent action platform game can be played by up to four people cooperatively. Rayman Legends is quite visually pretty, with striking coloring. In addition, the phases present many challenges and there are a large number of levels to overcome. It can be finished in about ten hours, but if you are very adventurous and want to do it all, you will have more than enough content.
Released a few years ago, we can still find this game available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, although the game has been kept alive with updated support for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
For the sake of not entering into discussions, this time we have decided to highlight what are undoubtedly two of the best family racing games sagas that have been made.
Starting with the Nintendo classic, the latest installment the game looks better than ever, with many characters to choose from and circuits to compete for. There are many ways to entertain yourself for many afternoons, and it is always funny to be part of the swing when using objects.
Although the newly remastered Crash Team Racing has nothing to envy, which with a greater emphasis on speed, jumps and sharp corners, will also offer us a huge amount of objects to annoy our opponents. In addition to the graphical update itself, this installment returns with new modes, characters and karts available.
Thus, while Mario keeps his exclusivity on Nintendo Switch, we can enjoy a somewhat greater compatibility for the Crash title, which in addition to PS4, will also be available on Xbox One and Switch.
Just Dance 2020
If there is something we like more than being with the family, it is laughing with (or at) our loved ones. That’s why Ubisoft’s dance game series continues to be one of the most popular family games for the holidays. And it is that in addition to offering us some of the current songs and great successes of artists like Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Billie Eilish, it will allow us to unleash our body.
All this with the great addition that at the same time, we can deal with those unwanted kilos that have arrived in recent months.
Still available for Nintendo Wii, we can find this game available on the current generation of Nintendo Switch consoles, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
In terms of platform games and puzzle solving, Trine is one of the best family games to enjoy together. And it is that although it can be played alone, without a doubt the experience improves when the three players are there, each one controlling a specific character with special abilities and functions that will help us overcome the different obstacles.
Although these are not particularly long games, the fact of having four successive installments, each more complete, offers us more than enough content to spend a few days solving each level, and unravel its fantasy worthy of the best stories .
Available for the previous and current generation, with the individual deliveries of PC, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360, those who want to enjoy the complete fable can also find a couple of compilations available for Xbox One, Switch, and PS4.
From the classic Marvel and DC superheroes, through the magic of Harry Potter, the fantasy worlds of The Lord of the Rings, to the intergalactic settings of Star Wars, we will have an immense number of titles to choose from. And it is that although the stories and the main characters change, in general all these games focus on the same dynamics of exploration, puzzles and platforms, accompanied by the strong and absurd humor that characterizes their brand.
Although not all games are available on all platforms, we will have more than enough options to enjoy on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and even some previous generation consoles.
Although on the other hand, we can also find one of the latest deliveries of the brand, which instead of being based on a single third-party license, will allow us to merge all the products to create and explore our own world, with an adventure and an experience very similar to the successful Minecraft.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
The dynamic is simple: there is a bomb in the room, and nobody wants it to explode. However, only one player will be able to see and be in charge of defusing the bomb, while the rest of the participants must be in charge of reading the manual and trying to tell them what to do. With this interesting proposal, this game manages to consolidate a cooperative experience with various levels of difficulty in which a curious interaction is established between all the players.
Currently we can find this game on all platforms, including PC (compatible for Windows, Linux and Mac), PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and even two additional versions for Android and iOS devices. Also, as a personal experience, I recommend that those of you who have a VR range system, try any of the compatible versions of this game, as it helps greatly increase the fun (and tension) during local games.
The Jackbox Party Pack
The Jackbox Party Pack is a compilation of very varied family mini games and perfect for large groups, although we can also play as smaller groups, with three or even two people. At the moment there are 6 Jackbox Party Packs, with a seventh installment already on the way, collecting in them all kinds of trivia games, drawings, crazy answers, quotes, and everything you can imagine.
The best of all is that, thanks to the few requirements of these games, we will have practically total compactness for any device, from PCs to consoles, mobile phones and even smart TVs.
Although the Worms saga was one of the most popular classics of the 90s, it currently has a much more moderate recognition, although that does not mean that its games continue to be just as fun. And it is that after a brief passage through the 3D deliveries, this turn-based strategy title once again offered us an experience more faithful to the original 2D graphics, adding a huge selection of new weapons, scenarios, functionalities, and above all, destruction.
Maintaining maximum compatibility, we can currently find this title on PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch.
Closing this list of family games, we did not want to leave out this curious game. Created as a brilliantly carried out satire on one of the biggest problems in competitive split-screen games, in this game we’ll have to spy on everyone else’s screens. And it is that all the characters will be invisible, so the only way to locate them will be by looking for some characteristic elements of the environment, and trying to use them in combination with their screen and ours.
Depending on the use of a large enough screen for all participants to see, the game is available on all platforms, being able to choose between PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch.
