When the Bundesliga conference made its TV debut, clubs such as Energie Cottbus, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and TSV 1860 Munich were part of the soccer ballroom. Twenty years ago, Sky dared – at that time as a premiere – what the legendary “Miracle of Bern” reporter Herbert Zimmermann attempted on ARD radio in 1952 and which became an institution for the Bundesliga Saturday: report on several games at the same time, and yet the fan does not miss anything.
On August 12, 2000, the TV experiment started with five games. Today, the Sky Conference is the standard format alongside the individual games and has already received prizes. According to its own statements, the pay-TV broadcaster has shown around 720 Bundesliga conferences so far, with around 10,000 goals scored. Record reporter is Tom Bayer with about 430 missions. “The words“ Tor in Dortmund ”or“ Tor in Bremen ”are what defines the conference,” says the 62-year-old.
The best rating was on May 16: 3.8 million viewers saw the first conference after a two-month Corona break. As an exception, Sky had also given non-subscribers access. Last season, an average of 1.7 million Sky customers watched the “goal in anyway” alternation per game day. It was the format’s most successful season to date.
