Despite the extensive equipment and 15 bar pump pressure, the price is attractive.
Test winner fully automatic coffee machines: Jura ENA 8 (2019)
- Produces very good coffee drinks
- Milk foam is great!
- Many (10) different specialties
- Energy efficient
- Removing the brewing group is laborious
According to the manufacturer Jura, the ENA 8 fully automatic coffee machine aims to be a “superlative one-cup machine”. That was successful at least insofar as it landed in first place in the test by Stiftung Warentest 12/2019. The model from 2019 (not the older version!) Convinced in all disciplines, even though the barista had something to complain about in the taste test: the cappuccino was “without special features”. And yet: According to the product testers, the Jura ENA 8 is the best fully automatic coffee machine.
He serves ten different coffee specialties, including espresso, cappuccino, ristretto, latte macchiato – and tea drinkers get hot water. The height of the spout can be adjusted from 55 to 138 millimeters for different cups. The pump pressure is 15 bar. So that the fully automatic machine cuts a fine figure when it is not in use, you can choose between different housing colors at MediaMarkt, for example.
Another test winner: De’Longhi Dinamica Plus ECAM 370.95.T
- produces good coffee beverages
- different specialties, even larger quantities of coffee can be cooked
- large bean and water container
- App does not work with every mobile phone
Other tests with different devices and different weightings than the tests by Stiftung Warentest selected a different winner: ETM Testmagazin 12/2018 and Haus & Garten Test 05/2019 (both also readable via the Readly subscription) raised the De’Longhi Dinamica Plus ECAM 370.95.T on the winners podium. The fully automatic coffee machine has a 13-stage conical grinder and a patented milk frothing system for fine-pored milk foam. The brew group can be completely removed. According to the manufacturer, cleaning the interior of the machine should also be easy. Haus & Garten Test emphasizes the understandable operating concept, the quiet and quick way of working and the perfect coffee temperature.
In addition to the larger water tank, the De’Longhi device scores with a modern feature: the fully automatic machine is available with app control. According to the manufacturer, this allows you to access all functions, i.e. make all the beverage settings. However, you still have to put the cup down yourself … According to reviews in the app stores, there are connection problems with some devices – but you can also use the large touch display on the machine.
Price tip and test winner manual: Philips EP2220 / 10
- Produces good espresso and coffee
- Milk has to be frothed manually at the nozzle
But it can be even cheaper with just as good coffee – namely if you froth the milk yourself. If you are not afraid of it or if you usually drink espresso anyway, the Philips 2200 series EP2220 / 10 should be shortlisted. It is a fully automatic coffee machine with a manual milk frother: As with many portafilter machines, you hold the glass so that the nozzle on the front of the device protrudes into the milk. This is how the milk is heated and frothed.
The Philips machine can dispense coffee and espresso. The manually foamed milk also makes cappuccino, latte macchiato and the like. At Stiftung Warentest, this model achieved an overall rating of 2.2 “good” and was therefore ahead of the competing model in the category of fully automatic machines with manual milk frother.
Fully automatic coffee machines in the test: This is how it was tested
In its test, Stiftung Warentest examined several aspects that were weighted differently for the final score. The most important sub-rating with 35 percent was the sensory assessment. The taste was assessed by eight trained people in a blind test. During the technical test (25 percent), the heating-up time and serving time, espresso temperature and foam consistency were examined carefully. Instructions for use, filling the fully automatic machine, cleaning, etc. were included in the “handling” sub-rating (weighting: 20 percent). In addition, Stiftung Warentest examined safety, environmental properties and pollutants.
Buying a fully automatic coffee machine: You should also know that
Fully automatic coffee machine, coffee maker, portafilter machine – what is the difference?
Under one coffee machine (see buying tips) one generally understands a machine for the preparation of filter coffee. A paper filter is inserted into the funnel above the jug, in which the ground coffee goes. Here the hot water trickles in and down to the jug. The devices can have a relatively simple technical design, and they are correspondingly cheap. Alternatively, there are 1-cup coffee machines with capsules or pods.
Anyone who ordered an espresso in a cafe or restaurant must have seen the barista on one Portafilter machine. The ground coffee or espresso powder comes in a small metal mold above the cup. The hot water is pressed through here. Many portafilter machines have a nozzle for frothing milk. In terms of price, they are between coffee machines and fully automatic machines.
Coffee machines are practically a large extension of portafilter machines. You grind the beans, fill the metal mold, you can often also heat and froth milk and put everything into the cup in the right order.
Can a fully automatic coffee machine make coffee?
Sounds like a stupid question, but it’s not: fully automatic coffee machines usually make espresso. It generally forms the basis for cappuccino, latte macchiato and the like. Many fully automatic coffee machines cheat with coffee, it is actually a stretched espresso. It still tastes good.
How automatic are coffee machines?
Dispense a coffee drink at the push of a button, grind coffee and froth milk, run the wash program – the machines can do that. But it doesn’t work without care: refilling with water and beans, and getting milk (or milk container) from the refrigerator is not spared. In addition, the fully automatic machine has to be dismantled and cleaned every now and then, regardless of the automatic rinsing processes. Otherwise mold can form. After all, the drip tray of many models can simply be put in the dishwasher.
Some machines now even offer app control or even a smart home connection:
Offers: When are fully automatic coffee machines particularly cheap?
We checked the price history of some products. We did not notice a uniform trend. The rule is: You cannot expect a major drop in prices in 12 months. Over time, some low prices even rose slightly after a few months. It is still worth comparing, there are always offers. In our price widget above, several dealers are stored, of which the cheapest price is displayed and linked.
Is Coffee Unhealthy?
For more details on this question, see our guide to coffee enjoyment. In short: coffee currently has a worse reputation than it deserves. Regular drinkers will stay a long way from the levels of coffee and caffeine that the World Health Organization considers critical. On the contrary, coffee actually has positive effects on the body.
Well then: open your eyes and good morning!
