Google officially introduced the Pixel 4a on Monday afternoon (August 3rd, 2020). The new Pixel smartphone will be available for pre-order from September 10, 2020 and will then be delivered from October 1, 2020. Google smartphones are available from the following distributors: Wortmann, faro-com, Wave, Jacob Elektronik, Kosatec, Pilot, api and COS (source: ITscope).
The Pixel 4a model costs 340.20 euros (with reduced VAT, thereafter: 349 euros). Later this year, Google plans to have the first 5G-Pixel smartphones Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 follow, but does not reveal any details yet.
The Pixel 4a with LTE has a unibody made of polycarbonate in the color “Just Black” and a 5.8-inch OLED screen (19.5: 9) with HDR support. It has a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels (FHD +) and has a pixel density of 443 ppi. Other features include a 3,140 mAh battery, 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of internal memory. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G with the Titan M security chip is used as the processor. The eight-core processor is clocked at 2.2 GHz and 1.8 GHz and uses the Adreno 618 as a graphics unit.
Google uses the same camera for the Pixel 4a as for the Pixel 4 (here in the PC-WELT test). However, with a newly designed hole punch front camera. Key features of the camera include Live HDR + with double exposure, night vision mode with astrophotography, a portrait mode, a background blur for portraits, super resolution zoom and double video stabilization.
On the back there is a 12.2 megapixel camera with dual pixel technology and 1.4 µm pixel size, auto focus with dual pixel phase detection and optical image stabilization. Video can be rotated with 4K / 30fps, 1080p and up to 120 fps or 720p and up to 240 fps. There is an 8-megapixel camera with f / 2.0 aperture and fixed focus on the front.
The new Google Assistant launched last year with the Google Pixel 4 was previously only available in English and therefore not in Germany. With the Pixel 4a, the new Google Assistant is now also available in German (and also in Spanish, Italian, French and later other languages). The new Google Assistant is designed to better help users get things done faster on their smartphones. He can also send messages, find specific photos (such as “show me all the photos I was in Paris at the Eiffel Tower”) and facilitate multitasking between different apps. You can find more details about the new Google Assistant in this article and on this Google page.
As an Android 10 device, the Pixel 4a also supports operation via gestures. With a gesture from the right to the left edge of the screen, for example, you can go back. A gesture from the bottom up shows the start screen. And because the device comes from Google, it is guaranteed to receive updates to Android 11, Android 12 and then at least Android 13.
The “intelligent battery” function, which is preset, should ensure a long battery life. Through machine learning, the Pixel 4a recognizes which apps are rarely used and automatically limits their battery consumption. The function can also predict when the battery is empty and automatically limit the background activities accordingly in order to extend the runtime. With the quick-charge function, the Pixel 4a can be charged faster with the included 18-watt adapter.
Pixel 4a measures 144 x 69.4 x 8.2 millimeters and weighs 143 grams. Starting September 10th, Google will accept pre-orders in the Google Play Store. From October 1st, the Pixel 4a will be available in the Google Store and at Vodafone, o2, mobilcom-debitel, Media Markt and Saturn. All buyers receive a bonus of 3 months YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass and Google One (with 100 GB online storage space and premium support).
In autumn, Google also plans to introduce Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5. So far, however, Google has only revealed this detail: The Pixel 4a (5G) will be available for 486.40 euros (including VAT reduction, then 499 euros). How much the Pixel 5 will cost is not yet revealed. (PC world)
