The latest game in the popular Yakuza series, also known as Yakuza 7, will be released this November in the West.
For those unfamiliar with Yakuza, this is a battered franchise owned by Sega and created by Toshihiro Nagoshi. It follows the world of the Yakuza and mainly takes place in the fictional Kamurocho district of Tokyo. However, this latest title is a clear departure from the series in several ways.
Meet Ichiban, Yakuza’s brand new protagonist
Yakuza: Like a Dragon differs from the others in the series for several reasons. First of all, there is a brand new protagonist named Ichiban Kasuga after seeing the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s story in Yakuza 6. The backdrop was also moved to Yokohama.
Ichiban Kasuga is a low-ranking Yakuza member who is toppled for a crime he has not committed. After 18 long years in prison, he finds that no one is waiting for him outside and his clan has been destroyed by a man he respects. Ichiban follows like a dragon when he discovers the truth about his family’s treachery. With it are a group of strange buddies, including a rogue cop, an ex-nurse and a hostess.
From beat ’em up to RPG
Perhaps the biggest difference is in gameplay. Like a Dragon does not offer the usual action that we saw in the other games, but a turn-based RPG fighting style.
When you get tired of struggling through the city, the local arcade offers some classic Sega games to get stuck in. Or you can compete with the locals in a go-kart race around Yokohama. In addition to the main quest, there are at least 50 sub stories to keep you entertained.
English Dub With the legendary George Takei
Since Yakuza 2, every game in the series has included Japanese voice-overs with English subtitles for its western releases. This time, however, we get a full English dub – with none other than George Takei on board. Takei will express the Yakuza patriarch Masumi Arakawa.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon release date and price
While a current Microsoft Store list on Steam is listed as “Coming Soon”, the release date is set to November 13, 2020.
This game costs $ 59.99 for the regular Ichi Edition. However, you can upgrade to Hero Edition for $ 69.99 or Legendary Hero Edition for $ 89.99. The Hero Edition offers a selection of DLC as well as the Legends costume set, the job set and the management mode set. The Legendary Hero Edition includes the entire DLC including all costume sets and some additional in-game content.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PC and the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. If you buy this game on Xbox One, you will apparently also get the Xbox Series X version for free. We expect PlayStation to have something similar for those upgrading to PS5.
