Have you ever wondered what a pencil lead is made of? Well, it turns out that It is mainly composed of graphite, among other materials.

As the team of researchers from the University of Missouri have appreciated in their study, those pencil mines that contain more than 90% graphite can produce a large amount of energy generated by pencil friction on the paper surface.

Not only that, but 93% graphite pencils are best for creating biometric devices drawn on paper attached to our skin. In this sense, the pencil would be used to draw graphite patterns, whose strokes would serve as detection electrodes, on a flexible support that in this case would be a normal paper.

Like most biometric devices, this curious invention contains two main components: on the one hand, the part in charge of biometric monitoring (in this case the graphite of the pencil), and on the other, a flexible material that serves as a support structure and keep in contact with the skin (paper).

These scanners would allow monitor different biophysical and biochemical signals in real time of our body. From our heart or respiratory rate to skin temperature. Not to mention its low cost as they are made of materials so cheap and easy to get.
